Yaris Broke Down, Can Anyone Help?

I have an 02 yaris and on my way home today almost at my front door I felt something go wrong with the car, like a shudder and the car slowed down to a stop, both oil and Battery light came on. Now the car won't start at all and when the ignition is on the Battery and and oil light are still on. there seems to be plenty of oil in the car and my cd player and lights still come on so surely the Battery isn't so bad that the car won't start? Im totally new to cars with this being my first one, so can anyone advise me on this please?

I am guessing you have tried to lock and unlock the car.. and then tried the yaris method of starting

(pressing the clutch in) ?

Yeah just tried both of these after reading up on some of the threads in there, still no luck

The oil and Battery light will come on and stay on with the ignition. They only go out when the engine is running as the oil light is for oil pressure (no oil pressure when engine is stopped so light stays on) and the Battery light is to show the alternator is charging the Battery (will only charge when engine is running).

Does the car try to start at all? Does it try and spin over? Have you checked the fuel level?

I found out what the problem is.. but i cant see me getting it fixed without it costing an arm & a leg, so any help is greatly appreciated. I was only given 1 key with the car & it turns out it isn't the one that controls the immobiliser... Also, the place i bought it from will not help me locate this missing key. Do any of you guys know how i could get the car started with the 1 key i have? I know it is possible cause a friend of a friend got it started the last time this happened, but i dont want to have to pay this guy everytime it happens.

That sounds like a red herring to me.

I could be wrong, but I thought that with almost all Toyotas you get 3 keys, all of which have the immobiliser chip in them.

Of the 3 keys 2 are full function keys, and the third won't open some of the locks - usually glove compartment and tailgate.

Do you have that third, limited function key, or one of the main two.

Or is the Yaris completely different in this respect?

can you tell by looking at the key if it is the type with the chip in them?? ive included a pic i took a few minutes ago of the key i have

Hiya,

I took this picture of the keys we have with the Yaris Blue (well there are two black ones, but only one in the photo).

The grey one, as far as I am aware is known as a "valet" key and starts the car but doesn't unlock the boot I think (altho I may well be wrong on it's exact functions). The grey one also came with a thin "strip" which has a code on it that they use to reprogramme the keys if you buy a new one or whatever.

I am really stumped on what to do next you guys, as i only passed my test last december & have had no success whatsoever with the garage which sold it to me. What would you guys do next?

edit: also the grey key i have does indeed open the boot

Hm.

Blue84 probably hit the nail on the head; the bit that's missing is probably that tag.

Did you buy it from Mr T? They might be able to get the code for you.

It's a long shot.

Failing that I think I'd probably contact a local alarm specialist. If you can find a good one they'll disable the old immobiliser and fit you a new alarm with immobiliser for a little over £200. But shop around and get a recommendation because prices and standards vary wildly.

Out of interest do you have (remote) central locking and an alarm on it?

I believe the grey key is the one without the chip in it to turn the immobiliser off. If I unlock my car with this one, the alarm will go off and will only stop after a few mins or so. Funnily enough though I can still start the car with it. The black key I have has the lock fob on it and this is the one that contains the chip.

It's a bit weird though that you've managed to get all the way home before the immobiliser has kicked in and stalled the engine?!

Toyota may be able to sort everything out for ya (new key fob, etc) but it's expensive stuff! As above, I'd also try having a word with companies that know about alarms etc.

That's because it's the one without the buttons to disarm the alarm isn't it? Wouldn't the same happen if you opened the door with the other keys by turning them in the drivers' door lock?

Agreed though about getting all the way home; that kind of proves there's an immobiliser chip in the key that hl07 has.

I know he's a bit far away but try PM'ing Parts King, he'll be able to tell you exactly what Toyota can do for you and a rough cost :thumbsup:

I would keep on pestering the garage that sold you the car, you would expect to get a key and at least one spare. If they didn't state in the sale that it only had one key you could ask Trading Standards for advice.

Alternately, you could try writing to the previous owner and ask if they still have any keys for it?

How come the key worked in the first place but doesn't now??? Surely you had to drive it away from the garage you bought it from. Did it start ok then? Has the key been wiped somehow?

I didn't have remote locking or alarm and all 3 keys would open and start the car!?!? :wacko:

I used my grey key when I took my car to be serviced last week, & it only opened the driver's door, but started the engine ok. I didn't try the boot.

i was only given one key with my car too how mch is it to get a spare key? i think i better get one incase i loose this one.

I cant see that the key is the problem here. If it was faulty you would not have started the car to start with. And once the car is started, theres no way the imobilizer would cut in and stop the engine, even if the key suddenly did go faulty. This is because the immobilizer ecu only "looks" for the immobilizer key on initialy switching on and trying to start the engine.

Just to clear any any miss-understandings, it would be very difficult to bypass the Toyota imobilizer even for an alarm fitter because the engine ECU needs a signal from the imobilizer ECU to start the engine. And you cannot dissarm the system permantly with ANY colour key!

And another point, if you only have 1 key, I would strongly recomend you get another spare one programmed. This is because if you only have one key and loose it, you will have to fork out for a brand new immobilizer ECU and lock set for your car before you can use it again. In other words, as long as you have 1 key that works, it is possible to program another one. If you loose all the keys, it gets very very expencive!
