Testing using Acetone in fuel to

increase performance & mileage

Disclaimer: I take no responsibility for any damage done to any vehicle from the use of Acetone.

If you decide to use Acetone, you do so at your own risk.

Science

The science behind adding Acetone to fuel covers three areas:

1 - Acetone reduces the surface tension of petrol/diesel. Therefore during the combustion process in the cylinder, a large percentage of fuel is ignited. This reduces emissions and produces more power.

2 – Acetone if added to fuel will clean your engine by removing/reducing carbon deposits.

3 – As more of the fuel that is injected into the cylinder is burnt, this produces a better combustion resulting in less fuel being burnt overall.

E.G. If normal fuel combusted at 97% of its volume and Acetone & fuel combusts 99% per-combustion, you will use less fuel. See below:

If a 100% fuel combustion happened 10 times resulting in a distance of 10 meters. Plain fuel combusting at 97% 10 times, would travel 9.7 meters. Acetone & fuel combusting at 99% 10 times, would travel 9.9 meters. Therefore using the same amount of fuel but travelling further.

Any Acetone used, MUST be 100% pure Acetone and not suitable for medical use.

Warnings

Acetone is the main ingredient in paint thinner/remover. So it is vital that it does not come into contact with your vehicles paintwork, as it will damage it. Place a rag around the fuel inlet to catch any drips/splashes.

Acetone is also a strong solvent and can perish low grade plastics and seals. So if you are in any doubt of the quality of your cars components, do NOT use Acetone. Although the Acetone will be diluted in a large amount of fuel (volume comparison) and therefore would become weaker, it is important to take this fact seriously.

A funnel from an own branded stream cleaner (semi transparent), was used to add the Acetone to the fuel and did not perish in any way. A Turkey Baster was also purchased from Wilkinson, to make filling easier with the funnel. The Baster was 100% transparent when purchased. However as soon as it came into contact with the Acetone, it became opaque. So after the first use I did not use it again, this was because I found just the funnel easier.

Prolonged use of Acetone could perish internal engine seals, as wells as other seals/hoses and diaphragms within the fuel system.

If possible mix the Acetone with some fuel before filling the car. E.G. fill a fuel can, add the Acetone and then add to the tank.

Mixture

Petrol cars: For every 1 LITRE of fuel, use 2.5 ml of Acetone. Do NOT exceed this ratio as it will not produce the desired effect.

Diesel cars: For every 1 LITRE of fuel, use 1.5 ml of Acetone. Do NOT exceed this ratio as it will not produce the desired effect.

Testing

Test vehicle – 2002 Toyota Celica 1.8 VVTI 140 BHP, Premium & Sport Pack.

Mods – K&N panel air filter.

Fuel tank size = 55 litres. Acetone mixture required = 137.5ml. Acetone mixture used = 100ml. This was because it was sourced in 50ml bottles (approx 87p each), so using 2 bottles was easier than measuring out a 3rd bottle. Therefore the Acetone results documented will be less than its true potential.

The testing was placed over 8 full tanks of fuel, with a full tank requiring 55 litres (12.098 gallons) of fuel. This was broken up into 4 tanks of Standard Unleaded petrol and 4 tanks of Super Unleaded tanks, all purchased from Shell. The first 2 tanks of each fuel type where mixed with Acetone and the other 2 tanks of each type were of standard mixture.

To ensure a consistent test each time, tyre pressure, oil levels and weight were checked weekly. (weight = a passenger for 1 day and same mileage).

The same journey was also covered for each test. In addition the same driving style was also used. This style would be a combined style of town and motorway driving. The average motorway speed was at least 80 mph* and town speed was varied as expected. Toyota specification miles, are based on ideal weather conditions, weight, all the cars components condition, plus ideal speeds for town and motorway driving.

*Speeding is illegal and is not condoned. For this test it was used, in order to mimic a normal (observation) driver at motorway speeds.

As soon as the fuel light came on, the displayed mileage was logged. At that point, there should be approximately 5 litres of fuel in the tank. This should be equal to 27.5 mpg using the documented mileage from Toyota. So 25 miles was added to each ‘fuel light’ result, to give a total mileage for each tank. Although it was an estimated 25 miles remaining in the tank, this was an underestimation in order to provide clearer results.

Results

It is best to view these results first of all in terms of tanks 1, 3, 5, 7 and 2, 4, 6, 8. This is because the odd tanks have an Acetone mix or partial mix, depending on the fuel left in the bottom of the tank before filling up. Where as the even numbers would be a pure Acetone mix or pure standard fuel mix.

From the results you can clearly see that using Acetone increases fuel economy. Used with standard Unleaded, this can have an increase of nearly 25 miles over plain Unleaded.

If however you decided to drive more sensible and therefore economically, you would see improved mileage. Driving at 75 mph, rather than 65 mph, increases fuel consumption by 25%. So if I drove more economically by just 10%, I would get the following results:

Driving more economically has dramatic effects to the results. For example, using normal unleaded and driving just 10% more economically, will produce 40 extra miles (Stand Unleaded 2 figures). This would save nearly 2 litres of fuel and will match the cars specification mileage. Therefore if you drive 20% more economically with Super Unleaded & Acetone, you would produce 523 miles. That is 80 miles more than the Toyota specification miles, saving just over 3 litres of fuel.

Performance

Putting Acetone in with fuel does have a positive effect on performance. When mixed with standard Unleaded the car became more responsive, producing improved acceleration through all 6 gears. In the lower gears the performance increase was more detectable. In fact at one point I nearly lost control of the car as I accelerated heavily in 2nd gear, but wasn’t expecting the quickness of the responsiveness that was now present. As soon as you revert back to standard Unleaded fuel, you can tell that the responsiveness of the engine and acceleration increase is not longer there. Not only do you get a performance improvement, but the engine revs are also slightly reduced.

However when mixing with Super Unleaded, things are slightly different. The car feels completely solid, with everything the engine does. The performance increase is there, but the feel of it is hidden behind the solidness of the car.

Conclusions

• Acetone mixed with Unleaded fuel, DOES increase performance and economy.

• Financially it doesn’t cost any extra, as the extra mileage pays for the Acetone. This produces the same cost per mile figure although travelling a greater distance.

• Acetone helps to clean your engine improving its potential.

• Combining Acetone with Super Unleaded improves cleaning, performance & mileage.

• Driving economically with Acetone will produce fantastic results.

• Care must be taken with Acetone. Keep away from bodywork and low quality materials.

• If you use Acetone, it might be worthwhile to use it every other or few full tanks. This would be to lower the risk of material perishing.

Alternatives

(These are suggestions to improve the mileage achievable per tank of fuel, without Acetone)

• Use a good full system/injection cleaner regularly to keep engine clean & reduce deposits.

• Purchase Super Unleaded fuel. Although on average 7p more per litre, the cost is claimed back in the extra miles achieved and your engine benefits from the cleaning agents.

• Drive economically when ever possible to improve mileage.

• Service your car regularly and keep it in good working order, at all times.
