Now before I post the pics I'll put the disclaimer!

When i removed this part of the CAF my mpg rose dramatically without anything else being done to the car or changing how I drive it. It does however cause a slight drone around 1800rpm. When the car was brand new it managed 35mpg (iirc) at an indicated 75mph. This rose to around 39mpg with age. Last week it did 44mpg at 75mph and 2 days ago it was showing 45mpg when I got to London, much better than last time when I got 39mpg.

However I am not saying this will work for you, maybe something else has happened to my car during the night but its worked for me

I did this whilst I had all the plastics off so I could fit new bulbs which made access much easier but I think you could probably do it in situ or by only removing the battery cover.

How it comes as standard

The part you remove

And how mine is now

This has resulted in the cold air not being brought round a tight 90 degree bend and it isnt pointing backwards anymore! And I've driven it through awful awful rain and it hasnt got wet inside the pipe yet!

Cheers
John

I would stick a small cone filter in there.

But then you would have 2 filters and less airflow

Sounds interesting, I must try this. Any increase in power or just mpg?

Have you had it off long enough to go through a tank of juice, as it may just be the computer giving false readings. If it is working then you'll no doubt be getting further on a tank.

Might sonnd like an obvious question, but this part must have a function? Is it for keeping the air clean as it enters the engine or something similar? If you take this out of the equation would you degrade something else somewhere down the line?

Colder air actually uses more fuel ;)

Think about it, it is more oxygen rich therefore to keep thw AFR perfectly balanced more fuel is required. - which is why engines have a cold start system or choke, to either dump a load more fuel in, or bring in less air.

That part is just a normal tube, like an extension i think, if it has a important role i dont know

Judging by the way it is fitted, it is no more than an extension.

The only purpose i can think it serves is to keep things like leaves and other bits from getting into the pipe. With it on the air intake faces backwards making it less likely for things to get into that pipe.

There is still a big filter there so that isn't the issue, the issue may be leaves clogging up the pipe restricting airflow. Still i think its unlikely.

I will have to try this at some stage, with more air flow it might help reduce the flat spot before max torque / low revs.

Wow, a few questions to answer then!

Firstly, wastedagen- I took it over well over 2000 miles ago so got through 4 or 5 tanks worth with a mix of town, country, motorway and cross country blasts in that time. My mpg has consistenly been better since in all circumstances.

I think it responds a little more freely but if there is an increase in power it would be so small you wouldnt notice it.

T-sport 1978, as far as I can work out the only purpose it serves is to make the engine quieter, especially around the 1800rpm mark where mine now drones slightly.

Karma supra, yeah thats true and it has confused me a bit, I am wondering if its just running more efficently now instead, weird one!

Oldskool1, yeah I think you're probably right, however nothing has got into the pipe so far and as said the filter is still in place anyway.

I'll be putting it back on whilst it goes for a service soon but will most likely take it off again, whilst its on I'll see if I can tell any other differences

Cheers
John

John, i must thank you for your intervention. Removing the piece of pipe like you did, i finally got reed of the stange vibration i had around 2k rpm. Probably wasnt fitted very well. Now the car is much smoother. Do not try to remove the second section of pipe, the engine become verry noisy. Hope my words are understandable, english is not my native language.

This is because one part is fixed to the body work and the other to the engine, this causes it to rattle / vibrate on this joint as posted a while back http://toyotaownersc...showtopic=97169
