Uncle Bob
Hello Guys,
Brief history, I've been a Rav4 owner for a few years ( now sold ) and currently have a 2.8 Celica-Supra, my daughter has just past her test, so time to find her a car and it has to be a Toyota ! and although I've spend a bit of time on the Yaris section asking questions, the Yaris is now out of the question from an insurance prospective, lets face it I'd rather spend more of our budget on the car and not the insurance ;) .
Step forward the 1.0 AYGO :) she passed he test in an auto ,so the 1.0 MMT is the car of choice, I've read all about the potential problems, so I'm gear up when it come to a road test...now a few question please...
1) would you guys say a 3 or 5 door is easer to see out when reversing, as the 3 doors seems to have big pillars at the back.
2) Air/Con is proving to be a rare extra at the budget we are spending, is it a big deal or could i go with out it ? its not so much keeping cool but the winter demisting....are is the AYGO quick to warm up ?
I road tested an AYGO the other day but not with a view to buy just to test out how the MMT worked and i was pleasantly surprised how smooth it drove, was a bit gutless up hills but then that not an issue. Also love the sound of the engine, yes its a 3 pot but has a sort of V6 throb about it :)
The car i'm returning to look at is a 2006 (56) AYGO+ 1.0 MMT 3 door, in silver with 19600 miles on the clock, full dealer history and clean bodywork other that a few shopping trolley scares ( same again to to worried as I'm sure it will have a few more at some stage ! ) price is £5995 although I've not got into the negotiation stage yet.
It seems this type of economical car is very popular due to the current climate and its had to find clean ones at this price and not have to travel to far....your thoughts please,
Bob.

...evening and respect....
your gallery only leaves me speechless!!!

40 yrs already, and previous car was Corolla RWD 1.3 1976... Living in kefalonia,Greece.

needless to write about Toyota's quality..
From 1/07 owner of a Aygo MMT 5d, 1.0 , first owner of an MMT in the entire island. Nothing to ask anywhere, none to compare, and it came in Sport edition alloys, fog lights, etc, at 12.400 euros. (Manual had and has 550 e less.)

Since then, the clock writes 60.000 km, and i still enjoy it every time...
i'd propose you to stick in 5d, cause it;s much-much more convenient.
MMT is 3rd generation, started with Yaris in 2000-01, had some issues then, but quickly resolved by Toyota, that's why i ordered MMT and hade not even driven it.
Our clutch is electronically controlled, and our gearbox is the same with manual edition, it;s not automatic, but hubrid box.
best fuel consumption ever 19-21 km/lt, 3cyl feeling when in idle or traffic light, arena-mirrors, in 5d editions ALL PEOPLE think it's 3 door and are hading to driver's seat in order to fold it, tight engine bay, toothbrush space in the trunk, do not close the back window by smashing it, it warms up in about 2 min.

Air-con is standard in Greece, but... When working in our scorching summer, it absorbes lot of power, only issue when you're trying to accelerate to overtake. In winter it works for 15 min every week, for the compressor safety.

Warranty?
front light filled with water, went to dealer, changed it free.
engine oil only 0w/40, 5w/40, 10w/40. toyota suggests 5 or 10w/30 which is eco-friendly etc rubbish, but they dont tell about working engine temp, if it will survive. Also more vibbbbbbbrations with 30 oil....
watch out for water pump, if the pulley has a pink colour needs to de changed, known problem, mine is going tomorrow for that.
our warranty is 3+ 3 years extension, so it is covered anyway.

Go for it, it's a car everyone likes. here we have a Rover 416 full auto, Opel GTC 1.8 manual, and Seat Ibiza 1.6 manual.
Guess what, aygo is the only winner.

Also have done many trips in Athens and there is it's reign....

price sounds good about 6500 e, Yaris on the other side is much more heavier and nothing else to compare between them.

Don't know about ins prices in UK, but here in Gr, i pay 240 e / year and 93 e /yr for road taxes.

Hope i helped a little, feel free asking anything. also have done some upgrades....

I have hade my aygo since the end of march this year (almost 7 months now!) Only problems I have had is - It leaks on the front right hand side and some paint stripped off of the front bumper during a wash. I have 22.000 km's and no other issues! Mine is a Red 5 Door, with A/C. also heats up really quick, and it has a full size spare! Tyres for this car are around 35 euros (The Conti's). Servicing here in portugal is around 90 euros for the simple one and around 150 euros for the more complex. - Here they only use 10w40 oil :(. The stereo isnt all that bad, and i have driven 300km's with 4 people inside at a reasonable speed. The guys in the back were pretty conortable!

Have not had to change Break pads or disks yet, or the clutch. ( According to some posts on the forum these tend to cause some problems, not sure if they have been solved yet or not..)

Yes it is.

Well i looked over this AYGO today but it was a dealers PX and it showed, inside was a grubby mess with damp in the glove box area and the nearside rear wing had been badly repainted, so back off to study the Auto Trader site for fresh metal to view :)

It is probably worth you and your daughter studying into how to drive an MMT properly, particularly your daughter! Its not a slight on either of your driving skills but its important to understand there are very MMT-specific techniques on how to get the best out of the car and to avoid any clutch damage and the car jumping between 2 and 3 gear on going up hills. I got the shock of my life when I discovered my little Aygo could easily roll back on hills at roundabouts/junctions as I passed my test in an automatic, not an MMT. It wasn't something I was prepared for so make sure your daughter knows how to do a clutchless hill start to avoid the tears of hitting a car behind. If you search on the forum (not in the Aygo section I think), there are some comments about how to drive one. I panicked the other day when my brother showed me the negative comments about the MMT but now discovered it was on previous generations of the box.

I wish I had the 5 door. Its a real pain with the 3 door because the seats don't have memory when you move them to let people in the back. It saves so much hassle. Its also easy to sling in a few bags of shopping with the 5 door, considering the boot is tiny. All girlies will appreciate more space for their clothes shopping ;)

I hope that helps,
Catherine
Uncle Bob
Many thanks Catherine :)

You can fit a 7 year old child in the boot of the Aygo I have learnt from experience ! :)

Also, for MMT I always use manual mode and then manually change up, letting it auto change down when it wants. So I only ever change up unless I am ragging it. Manual mode is a lot quicker than the E auto mode. I really like the gearbox. Good luck with your hunting.

I have just bought a new Aygo - my previous car was the new shape Yaris - on a 56 plate....oh and it was a 1.3 petrol 5 speed manual 3 door T3 lol

In my opinion the aygo is a better car for my needs, and should be more reliable.

I had a lot of problems with the gearbox/clutch on the Yaris.

All i needed (being a young driver myself) - is a small economical car, that was safe, and could carry me and the odd passenger now and then, the aygo fits this perfectly.

I went for the 3 door - personal preference, hate 5 doors on small cars.

For driving - its one of the easiest cars to drive, especially round town (i have driven a ford galaxy before the yaris btw!)

Parking could not be easier!!

Yes the 3 door has larger pillars, but the car is soooo small, and the rear of the car isn’t far behind your head - parking really shouldn’t be an issue.

Economy, mine isnt run in yet, and is returning 58mpg consistently.

insurance group 1 - so cheapest and easiest car to insure yet.

road tax - think its going down to £20 next year! - and thats for the whole year.

Tyres should last ages - and when they do need replacing, again should be cheap

AIRCON -- my yaris had aircon - i very rarly used it because the weather in this country is rubbish...even on the "hot days"

when i bought my aygo - i never even considered aircon - waste of money imo....dont forget its another thing to go wrong, and needs regassing every 3 years.

The aygos heater is very good - I think its the fastest warming up car i have ever had...I think its down to a couple of things..

The metal in the cylinder wall is thinner than usual - so i guess heat transfer to the cooling system happens faster...the pipes from the engine to the heater matrix are very short - so less heat is lost there....and the car itself is small, so less volume to heat up.

So although a basic car, which may seem a little pricey, overall i think its an excellent choice, for 1st time drivers, young drivers, or anyone who wants a low cost car.

Another thing is depreciation...this car has won an award for being one of the LEAST depreciating cars you can buy...the reason is trend, petrol prices & ever increasing motoring costs.

When i buy 2nd hand, i like buying privately - as you usually get the car a LOT cheaper. All you need do is an HPI & a good test drive and chances are you will be ok.

I will give you an example..

I had a go at selling the yaris private, for £5,500.
I ended up trading it in for £5,300.
Dealer sold it for £7,500!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So whoever bought that yaris - could of saved a fortune, but no.

Some great advise guys...thank you.
I'm off to look at a 3 door sport in the morning , in metallic Grey so fingers crossed its considerably more genuine that the last one i viewed :( .
If all goes to plan its a rummage through the accessory brochure, shopping list is, boot liner ,floor mats , glove box lid and maybe mud flaps.
Have any of you guys fitted or had fitted mudflap...worth having ..or not.
gordonh
One thing to check, Is the MMT able to be driven on a UK Automatic Driving Licence?

I thought I saw a post a while back that stated the MMT wasn't a true auto and therefore she won't be covered.

Also £6k for a car that's 3 years old, or £8k for a new one. I would be tempted to look at a new car for the warranty etc. Also the current finance deals might make the difference less of a problem.

Yes. It's got two pedals so it's an automatic. This rule covers DSG, tiptronic, CVT etc.

The MMT is only not a true auto in mechanical terms as it doesn't have a torque converter; the same could be said for CVTs and any similar technology.

This is part of the driving regulations....

Motor Vehicles (Driving Licences) Regs 1999:

Defines automatic

"vehicle with automatic transmission" means a class of vehicle in which either -

(a) the driver is not provided with any means whereby he may vary the gear ratio between the engine and the road wheels independently of the accelerator and the brakes, or

(B) he is provided with such means but they do not include a clutch pedal or lever which he may operate manually.
miss_d_bus
To paraphrase, automatic licence holders can drive any car that doesn't have a clutch that they have to operate themselves.

If it were not allowed, I'd be mighty cheesed off that a Toyota dealer sold me a car that I'm not legally allowed to drive and have been doing so for over two years when I told them what licence I had so they didn't try to flog me a manual car and waste everyone's time.

The key bit is about the clutch operation.
Teemu
About the AirCon it is also very useful when it is raining, it will help to dry the windows very quickly.

I have the MMT gearbox, it is very easy to drive. On a previous car had automatic and the only difference is you must use handbrake always when parking.
scarey
i got a full set of mudflaps fitted. all in all £25 in total. its not what you know but who you know!
i think they are great. and the genuine ones fit so well.
iv just bought some of the sill protectors as well. great stuff. ;)

UPDATE.
Very please to say me and my daughter when to look and subsequently bought an AYGO Sport today, its being delivered during the week.
Its a MMT with 13600 on the clock, it has the standard fit aquarium in the boot but after being offered a very good saving I'm happy to look into sorting out the leak, first job will be to remove the rubber grommet in the boot, that way it will never fill up.
I found the car very cheeky drive ,you just have to smile with the sound of that engine and the MMT was the smoothest I've ever driven, it was faultless....Hmmm do i want to hand it over to my daughter now :D athough she knows she just has the use of it when i don't need it !

Took this photo as we left the dealer, love the colour ( whats it called guys ? ), i did want a few accessories but the sport as a fair few already fitted , like Alloys, rev counter and front spot lights, it has front mud flaps and carpet mats fitted,so that just leaves a rubber boot liner and glove box lid to buy.
Now the glove box ....do i go for the matching colour or go for the darker shade ? i say that as there seems to be two colour choices on Ebay.
Unklian
Colour = Carbon Quartz

Teemu......If you are parking on the flat.
You don't have to use the handbrake.
Turn off the Ignition with the shift lever in "E" or "R"

The car is then left in gear just like a conventional Manual gearbox car.

I have a level parking spot at the side of my
house and I have left the Aygo there nightly for two years,
just left in gear with no hand-brake.

In the morning, turn on ignition.
Foot on brake.
Lever into "N".
Start as normal.

Ian.
