Full Version: T2 - Light Accelerator Pedal

Hello all

I bought a new T2 in July. All is fine except for the incredibly light accelerator pedal. When I drive it for more than about 30 mins I get cramp in the front of my leg (dangerous as well as uncomfortable). My wife also has a similar problem and we tried it on my daughter who confirmed our view. I rigged up a measuring device, and found it takes about 750gms to 1.25Kg force to push the pedal. Compare to about 3Kg on a few other cars with comfortable pedals.

Easy, I thought, I'll tweak the spring on the end of the cable. So my wife pushed the pedal while I look under the bonnet - nothing. That's when I looked at the pedal and found it's fly-by-wire :(

Took it back to the dealer who road tested it and said "completely normal sir". To be fair, I had checked another in the showroom and it was the same. His response to my "it might be normal to you, but it's dangerous to me" was to refer to Toyota HQ (I'm not holding my breath).

Before I activate plan B which involves a coil spring under the pedal and associated messing about fixing it to the bulkhead

- has anyone else noticed this?
- do Toyota acknowledge it/do anything about it?

TIA

Chris

Can't say I've ever noticed this, I find the car (D4D) very comfortable to drive, and do regular 2.5 hour drives with no probs at all. I'm pretty tall and it's not every car I can get a truly comfortable driving position in, but I had no trouble at all finding a really good comfortable setup in the Auris.

Just a thought or two .... what kind of footwear do you normally drive in? if your normal shoes have thick soles it might be worth trying somthing a bit lighter with thinner soles, or perhaps try altering your driving position a little, maybe move the seat back a bit to alter the angle between your foot and the pedal and see if that helps?

Thanks Rumbly, I'll go and have a fiddle with the seat height, angle etc. I guess it's a question of having a relaxed foot position with the right pressure when cruising; at the moment I seem to be holding my foot up which is what's causing the discomfort.

What Rumbly said makes sense to me. For a long time I felt like my legs just above my knees were "hanging" in the air, even though they should be resting on the seat. BMWs have even adjustable pads at the front end of seat to support those parts of legs. I felt really uncomfortable, especially after driving some other car with better support. Finally I made some adjustments and now I feel great. Here's what I did:

- Pulled steering wheel towards myself almost all the way and put the height adjustment in the lowest position.

- Adjusted my seat's height adjustment to the lowest position and moved the seat almost all the way back

The only negative thing there is now - rear seat passenger sitting behind the driver has pretty small leg space. Otherwise I feel great!

Best regards, Alex

Hi

I own the T2 model aswell. I find the accelarator rather light too. Furthermore, i find that when taking off, my car doesnt seem to pull as a normal 1.4 engine car should. Even on motorways, it struggles to pick up speed quickly even though its fully floored.

Also more recently i have noticed a 'BRR' outburst from the exhaust. This happens when taking off after the initial accelaration, when braking then accelarating again and when changing gears. I have had my exhaust checked and was told this is fine. What else could this be?!
