my mate just told me that he had some 225/45/17 for sale and i wonder wot is the minimum width the alloys had to be to take these tyres?

hi , the 17 rims i take it are 7 inch in width so a 215 or 225 would be ok and there would be no noticable increase in rolling road diameter ,but to keep thing more or less equal 225 /40 x 18 would be better with a wheel size of 18 x 7 . 5 inch rims ,that would be a better match for 215 /40 x 17. hope this helps

It is reccomended that 225 tyres be fitted to rims of either 7J or 7.5J..... although this can vary by up to 0.5J depending on what the profile of the tyre is (take an average of 40 series tyres for 7 - 7.5J) i.e. the larger the profile, the more sidewall there is to fit on a wider rim, the lower the profile, the less sidewall there is, so a narrower rim is required.

So.. to answer your question.......
It is recommended that 225 tyres be fitted to rims of either 7J or 7.5J rims
