Hi all. I live in the Canadian prairies (Winnipeg) and I'm considering buying a set of winter tires for my 2004 Camry SE (16" tires). I was told that I should buy a smaller tire (14"-15") because a smaller tire cuts through the snow while a wider tires simply pushes through the snow. Basically a smaller tire is supposed to allow to get through thick snow better. It makes sense but is it true? I don't plan on doing any highway driving this winter (if I do, it won't be for long distances) but do I run the risk of damaging my car with smaller tires or voiding any warranties?

yes its true.. a narrower tYre cuts through the snow.. while a wider tYre will only compact the snow below itself.

Best to get the narrowest type possible for the rims that you have. Used to run 145mm wide on 5.5 inch rims (13 inch diameter). Grip was excellent in snow! Also, for economy, just use remoulds in winter.

Also the pressure to the ground is increased with a smaller tyre. Since they carry the same weight on a smaller surface area hence more grip

Yes, a smaller sized tire will be definitely to your advantage in the snow, go for it.
