Nope, the dampers are the fluid filler parts which damp out the oscilation motion of the suspension system which is caused by the springs and the mass of the car reacting to an external input, i.e a bump in the road.
Shock absorbers is a common name given to the suspension components, usually the spring and damper unit together, but technically a shock absorber could be anything, including the foam padding on your seat as they absorb shocks that would be passed from the car to you.
sorry to be so anal about it but its just one of those things that gets drilled into you.
