Hi,

I've owned my 93' MR2 now for 1 week. She had full service history and really well looked after by 1 owner for 10 yrs. Although she had been off the road since Feb.

She was going fine and I was gentle but decided to open her up (not overkill) in 2nd at about 5K revs 2 days ago - bad idea. All the warning lights came on.

Turns out the battery was shot and I needed a new alternator.

Just wanted to know if this is a sign of anything else going wrong or just wear an tear?

Cheers!

I dont think this is a sign of anything else that might be wrong, alternators do wear out occasionally. How many miles has your 2 done?

Seen this happen a few times now. The vents in the engine bay cover/bonnet direct rain water onto the alternator. Can be more of a problem in winter as the water can freeze and crack the alternator. Most faulty ones seem to seize up snapping the belt.

Hi guys. Havnt been here for a while been so busy.

My alternator went when i was on the motorway on my way to scotland. Managed to hit it with my wheel brace and it free'd it :P , i managed to do this all the way to scotland but on the way back i was on the motorway and that was it, it didnt want to know. Had to wait an hour for recovery then another 4 to get home to west sussex.

Mileage is quite high approx 144k

Turns out she was leaking oil into the alternator! I obviously blew something when I over took some lovely old lady driver.

Any way the alternators fixed but its still leaking oil. Someones coming out to check it on Weds.

Is there anything I can do? Any ideas where the oil could be coming from or where to check. Im new to all this.

Cheers
