Side Protectors For Current Model

Toyota, for some strange reason, do not list the side protector strips in their accessory brochure for the Avensis. I have been informed that they are available colour matched but I am unable to find any pictures of the car with them fitted. They do offer some protection from other vehicles careless door openings but I do not want them to detract too much from the car's lines.

Does anyone actually have these fitted to the current model ?

Yes there are colour coded side mouldings available for the avensis like this:

80721584_o.jpg

They are £175.87 per set RETAIL. TOC members price from me is £149.50 plus carriage. I need your vehicle chassis number (to get the colour code and model) if you want any PM me

They are great for stopping those supermarket dings you get when somebody opens their door on you or rams your car with a shopping trolly!

Great, a picture at last, thanks for that. They look to be practical and stylish without detracting from the car's lines. Cannot understand why Toyota do not show them in their accessory brochure, they are not even mentioned - very weird. Now I have seen your picture, I shall definitely have them fitted to my new car which I am due to get in approx. one week's time.

Thanks for your offer to supply, I shall bear that in mind if my haggling fails !!

I was surprised they don't come as standard since the narrowness of parking spaces these days meant my new Avensis was getting scratched and dints from doors being opened on to it and people squeezing by. It was an extremely bad oversight by Toyota.

I started looking round and found them on eBay (probably sold by Parts King!) and from my local Toyota garage. Unfortunately they were charging too much. So I looked around and found them much cheaper on the Internet. The downside is they only come in black.

Nonetheless, they look fine on my dark blue Avensis. The upside is they cost me £35, yes, thirty five pounds. On reflection, that is a more than fair price for strips of soft PVC with adhesive backing.

I bought them direct from a Polish company, who advertise on eBay. They don't do Avensis-specific mouldings but supply several types, in strips. I ordered one strip each side and cut them to suit. On reflection I'd order four (one for each door) because the firm kindly chamfered the ends of the strips at an angle rather than square on. I ended up having to do that myself where I had cut the ends. (I mean at an angle if you look down at the strip from the car roof, not at an angle to match the rear door curve, if you see what I mean).

I took some photos of the car and fitting them. See post below.

I've had them three months, 2000 miles and a few car washes - everything is fine.

I could not agree more, they should be standard fit like the front and rear colour matched corner ones are. You can probably just get away with black unpainted ones on your dark blue but the lighter colours would certainly require to be colour matched. As for Toyota not even listing them in their accessory brochure when they are actually available is a bad oversight on their part. At the very least, in my opinion, they should be included in the optional "Protection Pack" which is available to purchase when ordering new car.

I think it is an oversight on behalf of Toyota, that's why they always have E&OE on their brochures (Errors & Omissions Excepted) You will probably see them in the next re-run of the brochure. They are however in the "Desktop Presenter" that should sit somwhere in the showroom for you to view accessories

I don't sell these on eBay, I can't buy them cheap enough to go on there!

The Toyota ones do come colour coded which adds greatly to the cost, and they do look great when fitted.

When trying to find a picture of them fitted to the current Avensis, I viewed the photo of every secondhand car available nationwide at all the franchised dealerships, via the Toyota UK website - that was a lot of cars. Not one of them had side protectors which to me, points to the fact customers assume that they are not available.

After seeing your picture, I agree they look great but equally important they do offer some protection from the far too many careless door opening culprits.

Step 1: Attach the moulding to the car with the tape covering the adhesive still in place:

MouldingPrep.jpg

Step 2: Remove the (red/orange) tape covering the adhesive bit by bit keeping the moulding in line:

After a couple of months (sorry about the grime!)

Moulding Manufacturer's web site: PAWA Mouldings

Moulding I chose: Black Side Moulding 6

If you want more info PM me.

Certainly does the job and is OK with the darker colours but needs colour matching with the lighter colours due to the standard fit colour matched corner ones. Perhaps it would be better if Toyota left the corner ones off completely and offered the complete set as an accessory in black but with the option of being colour matched - a la Yaris, Auris etc. - OR - better still, standard fit the lot all colour matched.

As it stands, it's halfway to nowhere!!

One little snag - I am told Toyota do not have them available in Venetian Silver as yet!!!!

Come on Toyota, you released the Venetian Silver earlier this year, after all how long do you need? - get your act together, it is probably the most popular colour at the moment.

Have just had a reply from Toyota Customer Relations stating that there are no plans to introduce side mouldings for Venetian Silver. They suggest as an alternative I purchase black ones and have them sprayed to match, which considering the extra expense, is very nice of them indeed!!!.

They quoted prices for the black ones as follows, front left £40.05, rear left £47.87, front right £40.05 & rear right £42.94 all plus VAT. (why the rear ones differ in price is a mystery to me!) With the cost of spraying added to this it would work out rather expensive to say the least for which are, after all, only side door mouldings.

Moral to this tale is if you want Toyota's colour matching side protection mouldings do not buy a Venetian Silver Avensis - stick with the other colours.

Not impressed, a definite lack of consistency here Toyota.

A quick update, the protector strips (4 pieces) fitted will cost £229 and Mr T will pay for them to be sprayed to match. Still expensive but the cost of colour matching being met helps somewhat. At least, eventually, the response from Mr T was a positive one.
