I am new to this forum and hopefully someone can enlighten me ?

My 1991 1.6GL Carina 2 with 4AF Engine and a Aisan Carb'

I am having trouble with poor running:

Symptoms are:

Poor idle, Rev counter bobs up and down erratically, when the car is driven it feels slightly slow and a little bit jittery.

(the rev Counter / Idle can be from 800 - 1200 dependant on its mood)

I have replaced the following

Dist Cap Rotor Arm Spark Plugs (all toyota genuine)

Checked all Vacuum Hoses for splits

Any help would be greatly received

Hi Doris, I'm having the same trouble with mine, not much help is it, my first one, which I now use for bits, ran fine, but it wouldn't stay in fifth gear, this one had a great g'box new radiator but hadn't been serviced for over three years. I've changed oil/filter, plugs, leads, cap, rotor, all belts, air filter and changed the carb, still runs like you said yours does. My mate at work told me that the little air intake pipe next to the headlight splits, both mine have, and this could be the cause of irratic idle, I've put tape round mine, but it does stay at high revs after you come to a stop, a small blip on the throttle brings it back to about 850-950 rpm. I'm going to change the whole dizzy next, in case it is something to do with that, i will keep you informed. Regard Gary.

Well for anyone out there with these symptoms, I have now changed the Dizzy complete. This has improved the car no end, no more pinking, idling steady at 750 and the rough acceleration has gone. Not sure if it is one thing, or combo of coil and vaccum unit either way it worked. Hope this helps !

It's normally the Ignitor in the distributor which gives the problems as described by the OP - and swapping the dizzy for another one normally cures the problems

as Carina Kid found out.

Have you checked the vacuum hoses under the engine
