I bought a 2007 RAV4 that was water damaged. I did orginally drive but it wont even start, took it to several mechanics and Toyota garages but no one can get it going! Keep being told its the immobilizer. Anyone any ideas or what to do apart from scrapping?

Can you give more details?

What model is it etc?

I'm sure somebody can get it going!

Its a D4D 2007. It has to be something with the immobilzer can bypass and it will start but only for a while but then cuts off. Toyota dont want anything to do with it got quoted over £7000 to repair. Very close to srcapping!

Well there isn't much we can do from here but I don't accept that an imobiliser problem warrants scrapping. You either need to phone around other Toyota dealers or get the help of a good auto electrician - there are people who specialise in those kinds of things.

Good luck and please keep us informed.

hi mate

what is the part number and what are the parts belong to this unit??

I am not fmiliar with imobilizer but I do not think that can not be founds in another country fafr from dealership.

MAy be I will try to locate it in another country. Do not be along with your problem.

In fact this amount of 7,000 pounds looks like spiculating. In order to evaluate this price given youo must to have at least 4-6 offers from anothers. DO not give up

Please come back

as said, a good auto-electrician or a Jap engine tuning specialist should sort the problem - sure its not water in the fuel somewhere cos that can cause similar probs.??

OK let's start again

what does it mean at water damaged???? whether this car was sunk and lifted up from the sea/river bottom? or what?

It is understood that imobiliser must be protected against water or similar - -it is normal. In case water has harmed electrical parts - it is another problem.

May be the water has penetrated into the fuel tank or into the engime thru an air filter???

PLease send more details.

Cheers/Igor

Why would you buy a water damaged RAV...(unles it's Igor's who has the optional outboard motor on the back...:rolleyes: )....They ain't meant to float or wade deeper than I would say the door sills..unles a snorkel is fitted...

Looks like Toyota want to quote you a vast amount just because they don't want the job....but still £7000 is a serious amount....As mentioned above...how "Water Damaged" was the RAV..if we are talking submerged for any period of time, then yes...you could say all the electrics are water logged and engine will have been as well....

Take it to the Top Gear boys..as there Toyota Hilux survived the sea...and they have a great mechanic who started it again.....

it wont be water in the fuel cos water doesnt compress and will bend the rods,(depending on how much water is in the fuel of course)also if the immobilser got wet didnt the ECU get wet too?how far did the water get in?lapping the sills?or full entry?

we can spent a lot of time for negotiating but the author is off line now and we can not get the original info in details.

Could be numerous things, he`ll have to start from scratch and eliminate things one by one, or leave it in the sun for a month and try and start it after.

This is a valid point. I know that water damaged tv's etc will aften work again after a thorough drying out!

I guess a water damaged car is one that has been stranded in one of the many floods we have had lately and although there may have been some damage to interior trim if they come cheap enough they may represent a good buy for somebody who isn't too bothered. I wouldn't give up too easily and a sit down with a brew and the yellow pages may pay off. Stick at it for a while gor.
