Mk2 Front Bumper Onto Mk1 Rav ?

Hi guys

Great site, I've been 'invading' it for a while, really informative

I recently bought a Rav4.1, lovely little runner, if a tad road noisy (!), on an M plate. Looking at the facelifted Mk1, just wondered if the front bumper assembly would fit straight onto the original Mk1? I prefer the clear lens covering on the newer model. Any advice, good or not, would be welcome. Thanks

N.B. I should have changed the title to Facelift bumper onto Mk1 Rav

Nice clean looking motor. Can't help with the query but there will no doubt be someone along later who will. :)

Thanks davrav, I've been very pleased with it. It pulls a lot quicker than I imagined a Rav4 could, and except for a slight judder at the rear under hard acceleration, which I put down to the differential mounting bush perhaps (!), its a car which belies its 15 years. I aim to change the speaker sizes front and rear, and maybe add some arch extenders at a later date. Its due for its 120,000 mile service, for which I will change the cambelt, and maybe the water pump while I'm at it. The reason for the latter is due to an incident with a previous car, where the cambelt and bearings were changed, the garage didn't pick up a notchy water pump bearing, and this seized after 100 miles, causing the belt to jump and bend two valves ( luckily ). I've got a manual, and it all looks straight forward. I'll let you know how it goes !!

nice looking Rav!

I am in the exact same boat myself!!. Just bought a swb 4.1 P reg with 120,000 miles. needs a cambelt change to be safe but apart from that really impressed!!

Am looking at doing the same with the front bumper so if anyone can help it would be much appreciated!!

thanks

I don't know for sure but usually these facelifts are only "skin deep" and utilise the existing hardware. The best suggestion I can make in the absense of somebody who has actually done it is to pull alongside a newer version and make some comparisons. Pay particular attention to the shape of the wings near the headlights and if they look similar I think you could soon overcome any of the other little snags you might come across.

Alterantively, just post on R4W as there are 1000's of 4.1s over there and somebody will almost certainly have done it no matter what has to be done!

Thanks Steve, I'm really happy with it so far. I had to change the back carpet, as it smelt a bit 'doggy' (luckily a carpet fitter I know always has hard wearing offcuts, so that saved me a penny or two), the nearside rear light cluster as it had a small hole in it (bargain on fleabay!), and the wheel centres, as the originals had faded ( another fleabay bargain  )

Looked in the Haynes bible, it appears that the only difference is a front bumper reinforcement bar, which I guess should come with the bumper, but I'm just waiting for confirmation from anyone who has undertaken this mod. Maybe we could be bumper changing pioneers ? :toast:

I've had a couple of quotes for the cambelt / water pump change....... from £345 - 430. That's one of the reasons why I'm giving it a go. luckily I don't use the Rav that often, so I can take my time with it. Seems pretty straightforward.

Hi Anchorman

Thanks for the advice. I have been looking at a facelifted Rav at work, and the wings, headlights, under covers, etc. all look identical. I think that the wiring will need alteration, as it appears the sidelights are added alongside the indicators on the facelift, but I may be mistaken. May have to ask the owner if I can have a nose around !!

What a cracking site, Anchorman !! Thanks for the link, and your help, much appreciated. It appears that quite a few parts are interchangeable, the bumpers included, with no alterations. So I shall be on the lookout for a scrapper with a decent front bumper now. Cheers!

Last week my local garage charged £200 (incl VAT) for the cambelt change over on my '96 4.1, the belt was approx. £100.

Incidentaly, looking at the picture of your car, my aerial only projects about 6", should it come out more....?

Hi Sandy

That's a good price for a belt change. As for the aerial, if yours is the same type, then yes it should come out a bit more. I sprayed mine with a silicone-based lubricant spray, and it slid out eventually.
