Hope someone has a solution for you.

Top marks for posting the sample!

Get some warm water in a jug and pour it down over the serpentine drive belt and then as soon as you have done it turn the engine off and see if it still does it.

Also try it with the aircon on and off.

Cheers.

hello mate

- what is the cold times temp you are talking about?

- is the engine being stopped withoiut your penetration (key to OFF position)?

- whether this issue is available in summer time (or in spring)?

- how often do you change fine fuel filter?

- what diesel quality do you normaly use in summer and in winter?

- what is the alternator voltage when the engine is running stable?

- when were all injectors last serviced?

- whether oil pressure is in limits?

PLease reply the above first

hi igor

as for your questions....they are beyond me im afraid

im one of the folk who does very little mechanical work on my rav,its serviced by toyota as and when its needed, its just had 80'000 full service on thursday.

this noise happens just like the video all through our winters which can range from -3 degrees C over night to 3 or 4 degrees C over night for no more than 5 months of the year.

its generally colder 'op north' in this country compared to where i live in the south east of england, but during summer, like now its suprising to hear this noise every now and then.....very quietly, and again only when engine is turned off.

i am going to try anchormans suggestion....when it stops raining....as we are having multiple storms here today.

cheers,rambler

hi igor

no difference in starting engine,in morning open door, turn key, engine starts....same all year round, for some reason i always let rav tick over for a few seconds before i drive off,as i usually have to wipe away the morning dew from the windows.

same as in the evenings when i leave work, always start engine ,let it tick over for 20 or so seconds then drive away,i never ever rev it from cold, always believe in getting oil round, and wait until its fully warmed up before.....stretching its legs when i have to !!.

even after a long journey on a motorway, pulling in services after a high speed drive,i like to let engine calm down for a minute or so rather than just turn it off straight away...dont know wether this is good or bad.

my dad always reckoned these were all good things to do with a vehicle, just going on what he taught me years ago...he died 10 years ago..sniff....sniff.

just believe in 'if you look after,it will look after you'.....its not failed me yet

OK I need final confirmation that the only problem with starting occured at -3 C degrees in winter or basicly at very cold weather --- correct???

hi Rambler

Are you sure the filling station sells a winter quality diesel for the customers? I am not sure and it is because the noise ia definitely confirms that fine fuel filter can not pass sufficient quantity of the diesel thru filter element due to parafine dropping and clogging this element resulting the engine is stopped. The diesel can be frozen even after a night time at this air temp. Is your fine fuel filter equipped with electro heating coil? The second possible reason is control circuit fot SCV

(may be relay). I do not conside another problem so far -- check with the above first. Cheers/Igor

Sounds to me like overrun on a fan or something. Or a chicken.

It does to me too (something running on, not a chicken!!!). The fan is electric but the AC compressor has a one way clutch that could run on. We need rambler to do his tests first.

hello gentlemen

i just conducted a very very small experiment, and i can say that this noise comes from just behind the front wheel.

i closed drivers door with window fully open, and from outside i started engine, let it run for about 20 seconds then reached in through my window and turned engine off again,i then very quickly leant down by front wheel and this noise comes from just behind the wheel, then just after noise has finished i can hear air being sucked in somewhere very feintly for maybe 2 seconds.

it sounds like a 'check valve' giving way, sucking in air when it shouldnt.

question is ....is there any sort of 'check valve' within the brake set up directly behind the wheel.....,or any item that could suck in air behind that wheel?

i may have to whip front wheel off tomorow and try and see what is going on.

Nothing behind the wheel but noises from the engine will sound like they are coming from there. Lift the bonnet and repeat the test and just pay attention to the vacuum pump. It has a check valve that can suck air through a reed valve (sounds like blowing a blade of grass).

Just undo the clip and pull the pipe off and repeat the test to see if it is now louder. Make sure it goes back properly.
