Gen 5 Celica

I have had a 1989 celica gt (last of shape) for the last 8 years (best car i have ever had) but had to get rid at 175,000 miles! just upgraded to a 1993 gt (again last of the old shape) lovely handling and a bit more torque but i am disapointed with the acceleration due to the 5000 rpm powder band and the higher gearing (my old car with the 3sge engine came in at 3500rpm) is there anything that can be done, I noticed the gen 6 gt has 173 bhp did this make a big difference and can mine be upgraded? mine has a cat and a full st/steel pipe.

Mmmm, I would expect a gen 5 to be slower than a gen4, simply because of the weight factor

The reason the gen 5 motor comes in at 5K is due to the variable inlet ducting. This used to be called TVIS (toyota variable induction system, think its called ECIS or something on the gen5) and it restricts the inlet for increased torque until about 5,100rpm where it opens up fully for top end power.

I've never played with or owned a gen 4, so cant comment on whether it had a similar system or not, which kicks in at 3,500.

The gen 6 has the 173 bhp engine as you say, but i am not sure on the differences between the two units- all i know is the inlet side of the engine looks completely different, so it could be modifications to the head? Maybe someone else can help on this.

I'd fit an induction kit anyway- it may not give u horsepower on paper but it certainly improved my throttle response when i fitted mine.

Hope this helps ;)

OK, I admit that I am new to this forum thing above is my first time!!, but someone out there must know if its poss to upgrade? :help:

What about lowering the gearing to increase the accelleration, similar to what was on the gen4 cars I wouln't mind losing a bit on the top end if i could gain off the mark???

Please some comments would help

Virtually all the differences between the ST182/3/4 and the ST202 are in the cylinder head design.

The later model has no TVIS, better shaped exhaust and intake ports, longer duration cams, better flowing manifolds, bigger injectors and fatter fuel rail, better head cooling etc etc. There is no upgrade path as such, other than to drop in a complete engine from a later car.

first off what motor do you have in it 5sfe ,4afe ,3sgte ,3sge ive got a 91 celica gt automatic

with the 5sfe motor there very hard to find parts for so if you have that motor youll have to choose wich one you want they say 5sfe will only produce 250 hp but for the 3sgte it can produce up tp 800hp 4afe i dont anthing about. good luck
