Brake Fluid Change

My Gen 7 is coming up for her first MOT on 27th. September so I'm going to get it done end of August along with a service.

I fitted a full set of Turbo grooved EBCs and Red Stuff pads a few weeks ago and will get Mr.T to fit the HEL braided pipes I bought from FCM and to change the fluid.

Now here is the conumdrum. Checking the manual and brake fluid reservoir it clearly states DOT3 to be used.

I thought I might ask them to use 4 or 5.1 but doing some searches I found this in 'Car Bibles'

There has been some discussion as to the use of DOT4 fluid in Toyotas that recommend DOT3 fluid - apparently something in the Toyota braking system doesn't play well with DOT4 fluid, particularly the master brake cylinder seals.

Unquote.

So does anybody have any definitive knowledge about this and should I just stick with DOT3 as recommended?

Back in the bad old days, DOT3 fluid was good enough for most braking systems, nowadays, with ABS, Brake balance and all the other goodies, a more advanced fluid is required. The latest spec for Toyota cars is 5.1, it has better lubrication qualities and a better boiling point. You should use 5.1, available for about £6.00 from your local dealer.

John,

Nice to hear from you. Been a while. Not on Auris forum much these days. 'Gave the Auris to my wife''. Spend most of my time on Celica Club UK these days. Anyway thanks for the reply and much appreciated.

4 Will be fine but 5.1 is better, i dont think 3 is even easy to get hold of now, 3 and 4 really DONT MIX!! But 5.1 and 4 will mix .. although no ideal. :)
