Fuel Consumption On New Prius ...

Just wanted to ask any of the new Prius drivers out there a question regarding their fuel consumption , ours has now covered 230 miles from we filled its first tank , the fuel guage is down to half way and the mpg readout is up to 49.5 and slowly rising further , my question is this , on my parents 06 Prius 2 they can drive about 130 miles before their fuel guage even drops 1 bar although the second half of the tank on theirs seems to drop much faster than the first half, on our Prius 3 it has dropped steadily , has the fuel guage been set up differently on the new model and are other Prius 3 owners getting similar mpg figures and fuel guage readings as we are ?

Most of our driving so far has been short journeys with a couple of motorway runs 20 or 30 miles.

Thanks

I haven't really monitored the fuel gauge but yesterday I wrote the following in another thread:

"I've done about 200 miles so far - overall average low 60's.

Best trip 43 miles at 72.5 mpg - mixture of towns, country and motorways - didn't annoy anyone, just kept pace with the traffic.

Easy to achieve late 60's. Once in low 70's it gets increasingly hard to improve the average."

Today I did a trip of 59 miles and the consumption was 76.1 mpg, again mixed roads. I think I started to annoy people towards the end when trying to get over 75 mpg.

What im trying to find out also is the fuel guage reading , at just over 200 miles were you down to half a tank? How many miles did you get to a full tank before having to refill?

I started with about half a tank that the dealer put in for me and just topped it up today. So sorry no clue yet on tank to tank consumption.

I would be interested to know if anyone has made a physical calculation on MPG rather than just getting results from on the cars computer. I know its going to take a while to empty a tank :P

I only ask as the American drivers seem to be getting an over reading of anything between 5 & 10%. I know computers aren't 100% accurate, but that is quite a difference. My A3 over reads by about 2MPG, which I find acceptable, but if it was over 5MPG then it would annoy me.

Thanks Guys :)

:toast: If I get close to those figures ....that'll do for me!

Hey folks just wanted to give you all an update on the fuel consumption after first weeks driving:

Just filled the tank as it was reading 5 miles on the range meter , car had exactly 430 miles on the clock, it took £38.40 to fill it in Asda which was 99.9Ppl , that was 38.44litres. One important thing is the manual says the car has a 45 litre tank so although the range meter was reading 5 there was actually 6.5 litres of fuel still left in the tank which I figure would have covered around another 80 miles (so range would have been 510 miles).

The MPG readout display(average) was showing 52.3 but when I did a manual calculation it worked out at 50.9 so pretty close! We were achieving 100mpg on several occasions and well above 70 regularly too.

To sum it up I feel that once the engine has been run in this car will do late 50's or early 60's average mpg with normal driving and thats good enough for us :)

I expect the MPG will gradually improve over the next few tanks of fuel.

After first weeks driving I have to say this car was an excellent buy , its great to drive , handles superbly , looks fantastic inside and out , performs well especially in sport mode (eco mode is useless it totally kills the power we never use it) , its comfortable , the dash displays are great and mpg is outstanding and improving daily.

Downsides so far : NONE :D
