Car Breakdown

OK.....broke down. Symptoms.........initially stopped..... all lights on dashboard. Temperature gauge to the red. One blast of white smoke. Engine making loud noise at low speed not at high. No water leaking, no oil leaking.

Checked water, oil...cables, pipes all in place.. Managed to start her up at third attempt.

Driving home, Toyota light came on and then the engine stopped and I managed to roll into a layby.

I walked to a garage and the guy said it was probably the head gasket. I'm keeping everything crossed that it isn't as the cost would be more than the value of the car. They are going to fetch it and do a pressure check.

Any ideas that it might be something else....like thermostat?

Well it was the head gasket and at a cost of £700 to have it fixed it really wasn't worth it so the garage is scrapping it.

Not too impressed with the lack of help and advice.

Hello Nancy,

I too share your frustration with the often lack of help - I have an Avensis and have realised that if you're not a 'recognised old-boy' that lots of people ignore questions and comments. Not very friendly.
