Day Time Running Lights

As Toyota seem to be ignoring the initiative taken by most other manufacturers to introduce day time running lights on thier new models - has anyone considered fitting them themselves?

If you can tell me how, I would love to try. Just changing the low beam and sidelights has been a real nightmare. The passenger's side is easy but the driver's side involved me removing the collant bottle form the screwmounts in order for my hands to reach the light itself.

I changed the lights to Phillips bluevision as I know they give a better white light and also it is much brighter.

JaysPrius - Melissa on the Toyota blog http://blog.toyota.co.uk/announcing-the-in...y-pack#comments has stated The Prius does not have daytime running lights and Toyota has no plans to introduce them. They seem to be unaware that a directive adopted by the EC foresees that from February 7, 2011 onwards all new types of cars and small delivery vans will have to be equipped with daytime running lights - that's 18 months away!

T4boy - On the subject of the headlamp cluster - is it a row of LEDs, just below the parking lights, for daylight running? Or something else? Did you notice if they were wired up when you were changing bulbs?

No rows of LEDs I am afraid, just a simple W5W socket for the parking lights.

If the Prius has no day time running lights how do they sell any cars in Canada and Scandinavian countries? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daytime_running_lights

As everything is computer controlled it must just be a case of enabling the function in the same way you would tell the car if it had a cd changer or solar sunroof as part of the connected accessories.

I am from Slovenia and we have day time running lights mandatory for more than a decade.

The point is, that low beams turned on during the day time fully qualify as "day time running lights" here. And I would say it is the same in all countries, like in Scandinavia, which have the same principle allready mandatory for years.

Maybe EU Commision has something else in mind regarding new legal qualification of "day time running lights". But we will see regarding that.

But anyway. The role of day time running lights is to increase the visibility of the cars also during daytime as drivers seem to notice other cars having running low beams or specialized "day time running lights" much more than those without even during daylight.

You can also see Osram producing H4 bulbs named Day@Light or Ultra Life. They are standard H4 bulbs just with three to four times longer service time. Designed especially for users running low beams also during daylight.

I think that the UK cars have differnt headlight units from those in the US or in Europe. If you watch the new advert on TV you will note that it displays a car with the LED lights and it specifically says that these aren't available in the UK. It is indeed a real shame but we get things that the US cars don't, such as side mirror indicators. But I beleive that there will be a headlight pack coming out as an option in due course
