Well had the car all of two weeks was going great, first time the missus takes it out she curbs the rear wheel taking a chunk out the tire and the alloy wheel

So now new tyre needed, anyone know the going rate of what I can expect to pay for a new dunlop tyre for the SR180? and any idea how much it costs and how long it takes to repair an alloy?.

Somehow i managed to collect a chunk on the front left. Not sure how it happened

Anyway, i bought 2 new official tyres, don't like them not being balanced, i'm sure the bill was about £200.

Considering i've still got 2 tyres still on the car from new, they have done over 22k miles, still looking in good condition, they will probably last to 25-30k, which is pretty impressive for a car that struggles to keep the power down in some situations / high torque. Equivalent to some hypermiling prius owners :D

we still have 4 x original dunlop sp1 fitted at 26k, they was rotated front to rear at about 18k other wise i still think we have about 10k left in them before we will need 4 x new tyres

I came out from work yesterday morning to find a nail in my front left tyre, only done 7.500 mls as well.

I took it to a tyre place close to work, they said they couldn't fix it as it was to close to the tyre wall.

I asked about a new tyre and they said the sp 1 's are old stock now is this right ?

So as the nail was removed and the tyre was deflating I told them to put a Dunlop sport Maxx on instead it cost me £128 fitted.

Will this be okay on the front left or should I of asked them to swap it with a rear sp 1 ??

Cheers

JJ

Got a quote from UK tyres for £95 fitted, Kwikfit price match so got it done there as its just down the road. the tyre they fitted was the same as the others on the SR180 and its only 3 weeks old. I know it was a dunlop 225/45r/17".

Thanks for the update on sp 1's.

Am i going to cause my self problems running a different tyre on the front ?

In the Auris manual it says NOT to run different brands or models of tyre.

Thing is my tyre was deflating after they pulled the nail out so had no choice when they said they couldn't repair it.

They only had dunlop sport maxxs' in stock.

I only wish Toyota had included a space saver then I wouldn't of had this problem !!!

Thanks

JJ

The only time i would worry is when in the wet and how each tyre make clears the water which is the most important.

I personally wouldn't run 2 different brands but my tyre knowledge doesn't extend very far so i couldn't give a definitive reason as to what all the negatives are.

However as we are on tyres, i wouldn't rotate worn fronts to the rear, i know it is common but in the wet, the rear tyres are extremely important to clear the water from the road. If you go fast enough on fairly worn rear tyres in the rain / with standing water at a high enough speed, the tyres can no longer maintain contact with the road, you loose the back end.

I knew all this and i was a passenger in a hire car with worn rear tyres, and fronts too. We were on the M6 toll and entered into a sudden down poor, after 5 mins the driver lost control at 70mph, we did 3 full 360's, hit the barrier, spun 2 more 360's and miraculously ended up facing the right way, against the central reservation out of all 3 lanes, written off car but no lasting injuries. A clear example of how dangerous low tread / bald rear tyres can be in the wet.

Even so before and after this accident, i always buy a pair of tyres once my front's are worn and providing my rears look in good shape with decent tread, they go on the front and the new ones go on the rear. Providing you keep the pressure up and the fit it balanced and good and no shock / suspension problems, you will get even wear across both tyres and typically be able to follow this idea continuously.

After doing 3 full 360’s hitting the barrier and spun another 2 360’s and not getting killed, rolling the car, getting hit by another vehicle, going across the central reservation I think I may have needed new underwear

Two points: Agree 100% about putting new tyres on the rear and my second point: VSC

Just thought of a third point, also agree on not mixing tyres on the same axle

Glad you made it out alive to tell the tale

Cheers - i know, i'm so glad it was the M6 toll. All i remember is as soon as the first spin started, i just covered my head with my hands expected the vehicle to flip bearing in mind the speed.

Apparently the tyres were *just* legal. It was a miracle that it didn't flip. The front tyre was ripped off and the back end where the first impact hit was mashed in.

1 second we were going almost straight (very very slight right hand bend) the next the back end just went left. It went simply because there was not enough tread to clear the water and it was riding on a film of water.
