Shake, Rattle & Annoy

Hi

Is anyone else having problems with annoying rattles..??

I bought my brand new Auris SR180 2.2 D4D last November with 42 miles on the clock. It had been registered a few months earlier in June but came with some nice extras at a good price. It is a great looking car and very nippy with, in my opinion, the ideal gear lever position. This little beauty was the best car available at that time, even though my wife is convinced I only bought it so satisfy my mid life crisis.

I know most people experience a few teething troubles with new cars but mine must be heading for a record. As of two weeks ago my Auris has been back to the workshop 15 times for various problems. Most of the visits were for multiple problems to be sorted, including various rattles being reported. All my other problems have now been sorted but I am still left with very annoying rattles.

I have reported rattles in the dash board, centre console, both left and right door column seat belt housings etc. Have I just been unlucky or do I really have more rattles than Mothercare?? As these rattles are so annoying they really overshadow the pleasure of owning a new car...!!

Some of the rattles have been sorted. I now have two new glove box doors and the rattle in my ear from the seat belt housing is just a memory. However, I am still plagued by a very noisy dashboard/centre console, from the gear lever upto the air vents and this has been reported each time since the second or third visit to the workshop. On my cars last two visits to the workshop I actually asked for the dash board and centre console to be removed and replaced properly. Unfortunately, each time I have been told that the workshop could not replicate the problem so did nothing - despite taking the after sales manager our for a ride twice and let him hear for himself......!!!

My dealer is now telling me that all new cars have rattles and there is nothing more they can do to resolve my problems. He has even told me they have tested other similar models from the forecourt and found that by comparison, the tested cars are worse than mine. Hardly a glowing endorsement for Toyota cars ..!!!

Despite what I have been told by my Toyota dealer, I am not interested in other cars, only the one I paid for and I certainly do not believe that all new cars rattle as, surely that would make them unfit for purpose ..??

It seems to me that if this is a common problem, Toyota have spoiled a great car by failing to attend to the details many of us find extremely important.

I would like to get a feel for others experiences before I contact Toyota UK directly, as unfortunately, I think that is the only way I'm going to solve this problem... So..would anyone care to relate your rattle experiences and how they were resolved..??

hi,this is what is putting me off an auris sr 180,i don't want to trade my corolla compressor in for a car with faults as my compressor is fault free and rattle free, there are plenty of complaints about rattles on the site regarding the auris have a search.

That's one good decision. If you have something that you're really happy about you probably won't find anything better! :)

Best regards, Alex

My first Auris a September 2007 T180 had rattles start the second time I drove it. Highly embarassing as the first journey was 6 miles from the dealership to my parents. Then when taking my parents out for a spin in my new car it started to rattle.

That particular Auris had a fair few visits to the dealership, and some of those visits were for a week or more and still the rattles persisted.

At the end of my patience in Jauary 2008 I decided to inform the dealership, in writing, that I would take further action unless we could ammicably resolve the matter.

After a meeting with the dealer principle it was decided that the T180 (with only 2,500 miles on the clock) would be traded in against a new March 2008 SR180. I had to make a financial contribution, and they would give me a 0% loan for that.

The replacement car, my current SR180 does have less rattles than the first. That is not to say it does not rattle. From all the Auris I have driven there appear to be common rattles that are a feature of the car.

1, Passenger Side (furthest airvent) area rattle caused by the air ducting rattling where it meets the connection to the airvent moulded in the dashboard. There is a fix available for this from Toyota as a kit for the dealer.

2, Behind the upper glovebox, usually the wiring loom rattling between a structural strenghthening bar and the rear of the upper glovebox. Fix depends on dealer.

3, The centre console (Air Vents, Radio, Climate). On my first car each component was removed, and all joining surfaces covered in felt... they still rattled.

4, Drivers Side upper seatbelt mount area, these tend to come and go.

5, Over Door Curtain Airbag trim, evidently this is down to the type of trim clip that was decided to be used.

The T180 / SR180 do seem to suffer from more rattles than the others due to the harder ride.

I do like my Auris dont get me wrong, but I honestly believe that the build quality is poor, as are the choice of materials used. I used to drive a fair bit without the radio on, in my Auris if i do I get annoyed at hearing the rattles for the ammount of money I have spent. Purely on this simple fact I wouldn't buy another Toyota, as surely two Auris gave them enough of a chance. But if you simply drive the car it's not a bad car at all, pretty good handling, and not a bad turn of speed!

Hi, sorry my SR180 is rattle free and going very well, maybe you bought a pup?

Keep the pressure on Toyota, you paid your cash, you should expect what you paid for to be fit for purpose.

Good Luck

Paul

if its the one where the a pillar garnish meets the headlining it is a special clip that allows deployment of the side curtain airbag. the apillar garnish needs to come away from the car during deployment.

i have an SR180 (09 plate) and mine is rattle free, odd occosional noise over speed bumps but thats more down to the stiffer suspension. as on normal roads its very quiet.

Hi

Hi BJ21

Yes I have rattles which I'm getting fed up even writing about. Dash rattles, seat belt mount area rattles etc etc.

I've always said I would never buy another car other than Toyota - Ha! not so now - Honda maybe next time.

Toyota's reputation has really dropped with this car - poor build and component quality.

Thanks everyone, most of your replies were very useful, especially the detail from Aldridge Andy and the comments from TruBlu.

It's also nice to know that some folk are not having the same sort of proglems..

Perhaps I should send Toyota UK a link to this forum - if its not already been done, they might learn something..

Ours has several rattles.I cannot be bothered to take it back to the dealer and I do my own servicing.

Do not care what anyone says I have never had ANY car that rattles like this one and never had a Toyota rattle at all.

Simple fact is it seems this car was built by the accountants and the legendary quality we all expect as a matter of course from Toyota now seems to be a thing of the past.

I very much doubt I will buy another one.Honda by all accounts still care about quality.

Toyotas should not rattle and somewhere in Japan some executive should be contemplating hari-kari for authorising this car.

The Japanese have an innate pride in perfection and quality and usually feel deep shame for producing something that is not the very best they can do.

Not sure what happened with the Auris.

Totally agree with you - I hope that Toyota does read this site. I also notice that they never seem to advertise the Auris on TV these days, all their other models get air-time.... perhaps they are too ashamed now.

I have had my Auris t180 for about three weeks and I have an irritating vibration / rattle which I've worked out only really sounds when I'm doing just under 2000 rpm - which when you're on the motorway in 6th gear at 70mph is about the rpm you'll be at.

My missus thinks I'm crazy but I am going to be taking it back to the toyota dealer to get checked out. The car has done 25,000 miles so isnt brand new - however I dont expect such irritating noises.

Anyone saying cars have rattles, particularly new ones, is just fobbing you off. My last car was the Corolla SR D-4D which I had from new and it never had any rattles etc.

Also do any other T180 / SR180 owners find that the engine makes ticking noises once you've pulled up after driving and the engine is off? Not sure but I think it is only after short journeys. I certainly didnt have it with the 2.0 D-4D corolla engine so find it unusual. If anyone can put my mind at rest over that one I won't make a point of talking to the dealership about it.

Thanks

I also have dashboard and seat belt rattles , but unfortunately have learned to live with it ! The prevoius generation corrolla is also plagued with rattles, ashtrays crumbling etc. I don't think Toyota has got it right. My friends Golf 5 GTi rides on 18" wheels , as well being lowered and still the dash board is sold , even at 95 000 kms !!! Toyota's plastics really sucks!!

It really disappointing for a new car , but if I sell now I stand to lose a lot more than 40 % of the new asking price!!!

Mine has settled down a lot recently and hardly rattles at all. The worst rattle came from the upper glove box and I fixed that by adding padding that ensures that the lid is held tight. I think the summer heat also helps, the plastic expands slightly so it all fits together that little bit better! There's no hiding that it's a poorly built car.

I've had my 08 2.0 diesel for just over 3 months now and have never noticed any rattles - it seems like a very solid, well made car (although given that my previous car was a Y reg Citroen Xsara anything will look good in comparison!). Mine was an ex-demo car though so it could be that the dealership sorted any issues to avoid putting potential buyers off.
