Hi

I read of concerns of warranty on toyota prius this question is a blank on a lot of cars i know from my pure interest in cars Toyota Prius

They have to much riding on reputation to sell something thats not going to live up to certain expectations . i meet and read quite a lot about cars because it is a changing world i have met production mangers that have worked on development of similar projects of the toyota Prius

And never got it out because they could not get the finished product one because of amount of money invested into prius was more than any other company wanted to invest into one project two they could not get their product on the road to work . So now they see the prius and are trying to develop their own because toyota have archived and proved that hybrid works. Hybrid is going to be on most manufactured cars of future until development turns again . i have met hybrid Battery manufacture and he told me of diesel hybrid coming (not Toyota )soon plus other car companies very eager to buy hybrid batteries from his company they have to consider this development to lower emissions and reduce fuel consumption . Toyota first had prius here in uk back in 1998 i don't know for sure but toyota try things out on home market before it is

Exported to other countries .In japan now they have people carrying hybrid for over a year in USA they have Camrry Hybrid their is a lot Expected from this technology and they are at the front of this they can not afford for this to go wrong . i panicked about two years ago sold my prius and bought diesel car expected 50 mpg ??two weeks after met auto electronic engineer talked about prius he said electronics of the prius was fantastic and seemed to think car would fall a part before electronic would give any trouble after six months desperate to drop diesel

43 mpg on run 33 mpg around town. 18000 miles looking at complete set of Tyres £460 pound per set . Toyota dealer looked after me

16 months later 60000 mile service coming up. 56 mpg overall average had 5 Tyres and i do not feel worried toyota have reduced warranty

i have colleges spent major money on repairs of other makes of cars turbo gone £1000 gear box repair £2000 fuel pumps on diesel chewing it self to bits blocking injectors and fuel line over £3000 i can go on but i am happy with toyota Prius yours Hippo

I think that diesel hybrid most probably has no future. Why?

Because of diesel engine emissions. To be future proof regarding new Euro emission standards, you must fit a diesel with super duper anti emission contorol system which adds up to the price immensly plus they also seem to increase fuel consumption and add to the CO2 emissions. Also diesels are not so reliable and idiot proof like petrol engines.

Other reason is, that Prius has an Atkinson cycle petrol engine which is almost as energy efficient as diesel engines are. The only difference in consumption is now that diesel fuel packs approximately 20% more energy in one litre of fuel compared to petrol. On other side you also consume 20% more oil from the well to produce modern clean diesel fuel. So regarding CO2 emissions and oil consumed at the oil well, diesel hybrid has no future unless diesel fuel is being subsidised, for example through lower taxes, as it is allready being done in some EU countries.

I do agree the Prius will probably be very reliable long term !! but if Toyota had confidence in there product and hoping to extend the technology to other cars in the range why reduce the warranty period on the hybrid electrics .

As some of the other manufacturers are giving a 7 years warranty on there standard range cars I feel myself Toyota should have made a statement in having confidence in there product .

I know diesel owners may get a unexpected expense with all the mishaps that may happen to diesel cars .

Citroen cars always suffered from the fear of suspension problems because it was not a common technology on cars but it was really very reliable but it did not stop Citroen extending the warranty longer than the 3 years .

A solution for people who are nervous is to be able to purchase an extension to the warranty when the car is new on just the hybrid system for a small price .

I believe Australia have 8 years /100,000 miles cover on there cars ???

I agree with you, that Toyota Europe decission to "shrink" hybrid components warranty coverage is bad.

Buy hey, they are the ones who will loose some customers due to this. I will be keeping my 2008 Prius with 8 years hybrid components warranty.

Otherwise, warranties are more or less decission of local Toyota offices. Australian office was smart and saw that most of the people are still cautious regarding the hybrid technology reliability, so they are keeping the longer hybrid warranty. ;)

In a year New Prius Hype will be out and reality kick will be in.

The Toyota Aus increased theirs from the 5 years on the previous model up to 8 years for the new Gen 3. AFAICT it's only Toyota GB who have gone backwards on the warranty.
