Wind Noise

Hi,

Does anyone else here with a Auris get a high pitched wind noise (like a whistle) at 70+ on motorways? my SR180 seems too and its starting to annoy me. I don't seem to remember my last Auris SR doing it. I sounds like it is coming from the left hand side of the car, like a wing mirror but might be from somewhere else completely who knows??. It does not do it all the time so I guess its has something to do with cross winds or whatever but nevertheless I hear it far too often.

Sorry i am not a auris owner, however i have a friend who does own one the sound i think you are hearing he heard too, it appeared on the motorway with high cross winds,"a whistling sound from door"

By trial and error he found out it was the door rubber on the passenger side, maybe if you do as he did and add some foam excluder over the rubber door seal and if it cures it take it back to your dealership and have a new door rubber fitted.

Hi there

I know this might sound a strange answer but I had the same problem with mine a couple of weeks ago. My husband had closed the passenger side air vent (the one next to the wing mirror) and the whistling wind noise was coming from there.

Once I had opened the vent the noise stopped!

Good luck sorting it out!

It's not the turbo is it?

I only get the wind noise in the back seats like all Auris's I think.

No its not the turbo i'm 100% sure about that, this is wind noise, its from the cross winds was also getting it a bit on the drivers size today as well, all I know is its coming from the front somewhere. I would expect this from a car from the 1970's 80's like a morris marina but not a 2009 Toyota.

i thought it was coming from the wing mirror either the air flow between wingmirror and door, or perhaps due to casing shape, I have to say that is you let the wing mirror get really dirty and never bother to wash it the noise seems to dissappear... So I ahve not given my car a proper wash for about 6 months!!!!

Not an Auris owner but many moons back I had the same sort of noise in a Carina on the motoway in crosswinds. I never cured it but the cause seemed to be the windscreen wipers in some way because it didn't happen in the wet. Either the noise was from air blowing round the wipers in a parked position or it was being deflected into the venting near the windscreen somehow.

You are indeed correct it is the wing mirror, today I had my girlfriend with me on the motorway journey at 70mph + it started to whistle as usual. I got her to lean out the window and fold the mirror in and the noise stopped, the wierd thing is how come it only really does it on the passenger side and not the drivers side as well. I could understand if both did it but not just one of them???. I am gonna take it to my main dealer and see if they can sort it out as I also have a rattle/vibration from behind the passenger seat belt enclosure that's also getting on my nerves.

i will hazard a gues that the windnoise will have to do with the fit and finish of the mirror cover (the painted balck bit) I bet there is a small gap, of misaligned edge that causes the wind to go into this recess, and whistle...

because it only happens on some parts, it has to be an assembly or a very minor part defect...

as for rattles... i have given up... the stereo is superglued at volume 20 , no more rattle noise

SIMPLES...

:D ;) :P

Sadly rattles come with modern cars. My 2002 Yaris has none and my Auris vibrates and rattle all the time.

i think it is more fundamental than that. In my experience Japan made and built = No rattles, or very few, Japan Product, Built in Europe = Rattly.

The level of attention to parts quality, assembly process etc... is not as good as the japanese factories, they are quality obsessed, and the parts quality checking is microscopic. We Europeans tend not to be that detailed in our approach to build and parts quality checks...
