Celica Gt Engine Code?

Hi everyone.

Related to this post about my suddenly deceased Celica... http://toyotaownersclub.com/forums/index.p...howtopic=101548

... can anyone clear up what the engine model should be for a '94 (M) UK Celica GT?

My mum drives a '96 Celica ST, and the docs for it say it has a 3S-FE engine. The GT4 I've found listed as a 3S-GTE. But I can't find anything specific for a GT. I'm looking for quotes for a recon engine, but need to get it right obviously. One guy has come back and asked me to confirm it's the 3S-GTE, which gtiven the details above, I don't think it is.

Does anyone know for sure?

Cheers

3S - is the block .. it's a 2.0 litre.

FE - means poverty spec head. Economy.

GE - means performance head. Sporty. <- What you have.

GTE - Means performance head, with a turbo. Only in the GT4 (and MR2 turbo)

(if it had a Z, it would mean it was supercharged. Like the earlier 1.6 - 4A-GZE)

So yours is a 3S-GE.

Now there are several revisions of this engine. 4 that I know of.

Yours is a 3rd Generation (the earlier 2nd gen were about 20bhp less, the 4th gen was called "Beams" and had 20 bhp more and a VVTi / VTEC style head).

Great, thanks for that Bibbs :) I've just found some other info myself which seemed to say the same thing, so you've just given me the definitive answer i needed.

Now I've just got to figure out if a recon engine is really evena good idea...

Ok...

1.8 ST is a UK car, they didnt sell it in Japan.

The japanese instead got the SS1 which is a 2.0 3S-FE around 140bhp. ST is 110bhp.

If your mum has an Import it'll be a 2.0 3S-FE or if its an= UK ST it'll be a 1.8 7A-FE

Next model up is the SS2/UK GT which is a 173bhp 2.0 3S-GE

SS3 is a Jap only model which 99% of the time had the 200bhp VVTI version of the 3S-GE

Lastly is the GT4 which is a 3S-GTE 255bhp (239bhp on UK 95 Fuel)

I knew the ST was an FE engine .. and I thought they were a 1.8 .. a "7A" huh? What was that, a 'rola engine?

uk rav 4 has the 3sfe engine in . 1994 to 1999 i think . my wifes rav4 is a 1998 and its a 3sfe , you may have better luck searching for an engine from a rav 4 rather than a celica. may work out cheaper too . scrap yards see celica owners as money pits.

Good call .. the MR2 had the same lump, but you'd need to look into the alternator mount, as I think the FWD applications had it on top, where the MR2's had them under slung.

mines the ss3 but im fairly sure its not the 200Bhp and we've already established its not the beems one, so what power output should mine be? i still reckon 173bhp like the UK GT but its def the ss3..... i know we talked about this in another post but im still confused.

If its 173bhp but its an ss3, whats the diff from the ss2!? other than it being jap, or is that the only diff......

TOC quest to find out which model monkeys car is :D

mines the ss3

What year is your car? Where does it say SS3 on it?

The SS3's all had LSD's and g-sensor ABS as standard. Im also 99% sure than SS3's all had superstrut suspension as standard. It was 1998 that the Beams VVTI engine was standard in SS3's.

Have a proper look at the documents. Unless it's from Toyota, I'd ignore it.

Government departments often get things wrong.

i'll have another look at the cert ive got

the documents are fairly limited, ive only got like a handbook of receipts from the last owner.

maybe if i get the chassis number, toyota can tell me?

S3 (or something like that)

You sure it doesnt say 3S? As in all celica gen6's (bar the ST) have a 3S engine.

The only Celica with a 3S-FE is the ST162 Convertible (the American one)

Thats the only one!

Your information is incorrect. The ST182 and ST202 also came with either the 3S-FE or 3S-GE

All SS1 ST202's had 3S-FE's, all SS2 ST202's had 3S-GE's.

I wrote it wrong, i wanted to say i know only a 162 convertible.

SS1 is before facelift, en de SS2 is the facelift?

If you say sow, it will be true, but i've got still my doubts about it...

so ive got the ss2 because only the higher performance ones were ss3's?

its annoying cos when you try to get an insurance quote they ask despite not telling you the difference in the 3 types..... so if i mistakingly say its the ss3 i'll get charged more :(
