Gt4 Engine Removal

Right well been a bit **** lately, mainly been working on my bike until a few days ago. Then we got the news they have binned the harriers :S so i'm ****** pretty much unless they decide to put us on the typhoon then god knows where i will be going. There's 250 of us and only 11 places in the 2 bases we can go to yeovilton and culdrose so god knows whats going to happen, motherubikers.

Anyway had a problem with the wastegate pipe being too high so the wastegate was hampering on the bonnet so had to chop it up and reweld it. All in place now, i'm using a flexible metal pipe as the screamer, had to route it over the top of the rad inlet house and down near the induction filter. Took it to 8k rpm the other night as i just wanted to see if it could, was immense and the bov was lush to say the least. Literally just the downpipe now plus my bike too ha

hey fawbs, sorry to hear about the job situation, i am sure you will be fine. how have u set up ur wastegate that it was hitting the bonett?

I tried taking my car round to the red line when gtforbes was mapping it on monday but my turbo made mince meet out of most of samco connections.

Right this is because of the manifold to turbo adapter. The flange for the wastegate is on the side of the adapter which makes things 10 times harder, if they had put it at the front would have been much easier. So i got a 135deg pipe and made a relocation pipe but the way i welded it i had it so it angled up a bit so that when you attached the wastegate it would just hit the bonnet before it close, only by about half an inch. I will get a picture today.

Oh right that doesn't sound too good, what bar are you running? I'm only going to 1.6 i think, depending on what results i get i think i am going to de-tune mine to about 420bhp, although i say that whether i do it or not is another thing haha

If your silicone hose connectors are 3ply it might be worth getting some which are 4ply or get some samco hoses. What happened exactly did they burst?

dude crap news about the job, hope it all works out for you.

i did wonder how it would affect you.

agree with wastegates they never make them easy to fit do they. cant wait to see it running.

also youll never detune it, i was faced with that issue when i cracked my block. but i decided if i couldnt run big power then i wouldnt run it at all, good thing i found a fix :P

Think our jobs are ok i mean i have another 14yrs left on my contract and so has many others its just finding somewhere for all of us to go.

I'm just trying to get everything done in case i have to move. Still doing my mates escort mk1 which is even more of a pain because i'm pretty sure his starter motor just isnt man enough to start the thing, i had to tow him with his peugoet to start it.

yeh its been a pain, to put the wastegate relocation pipe on you have to go under the car to put one of the nuts on the stud. Need to find somewhere that does adapters where the flange comes out the front.

Should start the downpipe very soon and the guy across the road is definitely a dodgy mot guy, heard more stories about him sounds like the type of guy i need haha

Ah I see what u mean. I managed to squeeze my wastegate in beside the t3 adapter. When setting ur boost controller up with the external wastegate do you have to take a t-piece from the pipe that goes to the top of the external wastegate and hook it up to the intercooler pipework?

No it wasn't ripping them just blowing all connections, that was about 1.5bar at 5000rpm. Away to buy a smaller core to reduce the turbo lag

Yeh i think you are right aj its somewhere in this thread cause lee posted it up, basically a tap off from the turbo or the pipes or pre inlet manifold

yep

basic wastegate pipe is as follows.

73897d1242696149-downpipe-wastegate-questions-wstgate.gif

replace the regulator with a 3 port valve and thats about it.

the pipe from the top port goes to the end of the 3 port valve with 2 connections.

im off outside to continue taking the rolla apart today if i get chance ill take a pic of my setup

I got a rev3 mr2 that I was going to use for parts.

I then found that I'd made the strut towers about 60mm to tall. That coupled with some corrosion on the inner chassis box sections has made me decide to can the project.

My engine ecu and gauges are going in the 2 everything else is being sold off :(

Hard decision but the Shell just isn't up to it.

I never thought i would see that happen, atleast i got a ride in it though. Thing is the rolla was discreet, i bet people would pull up in their porsche's not expecting the terror that was to be unleashed, in the mr2 it looks more sporty so you kind of expect it. Isn't there a cheap ae92 Shell anywhere in good condition?

There was a gl going on eBay no tax or test and it went for 380 quid!

It's finding a 1991 car with no rust

Trust me with over 500 bhp the 2 will be fun :D

Yeh 500bhp in anything will be fun!

how have you managed to tackle the turbo lag on ur machine, you must have a turbo of comparable size to me, the lag on my machine is really annoying! I am looking at a core which his a 50% reduction

What core do you have on now, got any pictures, dimensions? If i remember the lag in lee's car isn't that bad to be honest

it was one of the kits of eBay! the total size (dont have the core size) is 600x300x75. however i have my eyes on a Forge intercooler which has a core size of just 500x60x175, this will be complimented by water injection

the lag isnt that bad. i run an apexi rhx6 turbo and its on a full 1.8 bar by 4,500 rpm, thats on a 2 1/2" DP.

comes on boost about 3,800 rpm IIRC.

heres my power graph (its wheel figures though not fly

powergraph.jpg

it was mapped to boost slightly more gradual though being a FWD car. cant wait to up the boost though. 1.8 bar is like Oh S***********t so 2.2 is gonna be a real punch in the kidneys

ouch!!

if ever you see an rhx6 on eBay id recommend it.

its about half the weight of a ct20 and very bullet proof. also roller bearing too.

they are like hens teeth though :(

uses the same design turbo as the honda F! cars of the eighties! they made 1500 bhp from a 1.5ltr engine as well

Didn't believe my mate when he told me f1 cars were 1.5l back then didn't you have the option of a 1.5 turbo or 3l n/a? Incredible how they got that much power out of such a small engine

Yeah it is a bit if a sore one! One hell of a kick and noise when it does start dancing tho! I am thinking it must be due to the huge core I am using as if u just blow into the turbo I spins for ages with no effort! Yeah we should deffinatly go back to the 80s bring back the b class rallying too!
