It's worth remembering those numbers are all US. If you convert to Imperial its approx 20% more - so the Prius 47 mpg come's out at 56/57 mpg in the UK.

You're quite correct. It would also have been interesting to see the Mini Cooper 1.6D in this test (just checked the Mini USA website, it's not available over there), with it's combined mpg of 72.4. Not really competition for the Prius though, as you can't get five people and their luggage in one, and neither would it get you or me into town without forking out £8!
