Replacing Rear Discs On Rav4.3

Hi all

Was planning on replacing the rear discs on my RAV4, but as they use a brake shoe on the inside of the disc, I wondered if it was standard practice to replace the shoes too.

Does anyone know the procedure for replacing the shoes ? I have only ever changed rear discs on cars that use the pads to grab the disc.

Thanks

Look at the shoes and if they are in very good condition (as they should be as this is strictly a static brake) then leave them as it is fiddly.

Here are the instructions and the fiddliest part is the shoe hold back clips. If they are the flat metal type as in this diagram they are better and it is easier if you hold the pin at the back and turn the clip at the front. It will make sense when you start;

H_Brake.pdf

remove.pdf

inspect.pdf

refit.pdf

If you do fit new shoes then pay attention to this bedding procedure;

I have some photos from a 4.2 (same) which I will add but got to dash just now.............

Like Anchorman says,if they are worn to excess then yes change them,if they have loads of "meat" on them no matter how many grooves or scuffs on them leave them alone except dont forget to adjust them correctly or you may have to open the sunroof to put the handbrake on,lol
