Hi, I fitted Goodyear Optigrips on the front of my 05 plate D4d estate and quite happy with them in terms of price, road noise and grip etc but they do wear very fast. I expect around 10k miles from them. Does the reader have any other recomendation?

The best tyre I have found is the Continental Sport Contact 2. I have used them all my cars since 2003 or so. Below is a link for results of the rating. They are fantastic in the dry & wet, but not great in the heavy snow, but are ok up to about 25mm of snow, that's if we get any & the wear is fantastic.

They have now been discontinued, but there are Sport Contact 3 & Pemium Contact 2 available

Below is reviews by users of the Sport Contact 2's & Continental's Site on the Premium Contact 2 & then Sport Contact 3

Continental's Site below with magazine reviews etc.

Will be trying the Sport Contact 3 tyres, next time round

Thanks for that, appreciate it. The tyretest site captioned in your post gave the Optigrip a high wear rating...mmmmm! I had better remeasure them!

I have also done a little reseach. Seems like the 'Uniroyal Rainsport 2' also made by Continental give very good results. As I have a young family I want good grip as being number 1, but hoping to get more than 10k out of ANY set of tyres, although I follow Swedish laws and change my tyres at 3mm tread wear (winter) and NOT the 1.5mm in the UK, mainly because of wet weather grip. Many tests I have read conclude that the 1.5mm legal limit is too low in wet weather but obviously ok in the dry, and lets face it - it rains alot over here.

Any thoughts, Readers?

I used to use Uniroyal's before, I found how good the Sport Contact Continental's were. Used the original Rallye tyres with a 2 wheel drive Saphire Cosworth years ago & found them to be fantastic, the grip levels in the wet & dry were excellent, the same was for the original Rainsport tyres with a VW Passat with 235/35/19Y & the grip was superb.

I will always stick with a tyre from the Continental Group, as the grip & wear are better than the rest. I have tried Pirelli, Yokohama & goodyear tyres & to me they just don't compare in my opinion. Which is my personal preference, if you don't agree, that's fair enough.

I got only 9k on my optigrips, changed at 2mm depth. The ATS chap said that they wear better on smaller lighter cars. I have previously found the Dunlops quite noisy, and on ATS's recommendation went for Michelins HP Primacy (he had them in stock at 183 for a pair, fitted etc) and immediately noticed a reduction in road noise compared to the other tyres mentioned. Thanks!
