hi all

have a 2003 silver Yaris (made in france) have around 80k on the clock

every so often sometimes whilst im driving either on the carraige way or streets it engine just cuts off and i have to restart to get it going again this happens like once in a while probably 1 in every 40 journeys

now last few days i have had problems starting the car..i would turn the ignition it would like kinda start then after 2 sec just like cut off after a few attempts i manage to get it working

sometime i can get it started within one attempt the others maybe after 5-6 totally random!

any ideas what the cause of this could be?

Thanks

First question.

Has it been serviced regularly? And recently?

If so by whom.

If it is the fuel filter, it is unlikely to prevent the car from starting and you are likely to see fuel starvation at high speed.

If you don't know what a flywheel (or crankshaft position ) sensor is, it's a garage job.

Fuel filter is easy DIY - if you have ever done DIY.

The shuddering can be anything...

The position sensor controls ignition timing. it is quite sensitive and the internal wires can fracture over time and thus when warm give random failures. As it gets worse, ..starting can be affected.

It could also be an immobiliser fault, or fuel starvation ...or...

I've got a 2001 Yaris which was recalled for a check crankshaft monitor last year, this was done for free.

There's something online to check up on recall notices.
