Auris Beeps When Braking?!

Hey all, ive had my auris for 4 days now, and i was just coming home and noticed there was a beeping when i was changing the gears...

I then thought id see if i could replicate it, but no such luck. My first thoughts were that it could be the shift indicators... but it wasnt.

Ive since been able to replicate it whilst braking every time. It doesnt do it with a very light tough on the brake, but slightly firmer it does. These are by no means emergency stops, and the abs has not kicked in at all since ive had the car, so i surely cant be braking too harshly...?

Does anyone know what this could be?

2009 (59) Auris T-Spirit

Any help appreciated

Phill

Hmmm, I thought could it be, but then the ABS hadn't clicked in as when it does you can feel it through the brake pedal and the whole car, but it just felt smooth like all braking...

It only did it once in my trip to block buster just, seems to be inconsistant...

can anyone else confirm this before I think of contacting my dealer?

Have you studied your Owners Manual?

It might be an idea to check that prior to going back to the dealer

handbook definatley doesn't cover this. Could it be the brake assist kicking in. It's just that the beep isn't loud enough to be a warning buzzer. It's really got me stumped.

When I've had the Auris as a courtesy car, I can't say I've ever noticed it. Don't normally have the radio on then either because I can't be ubikd to re-tune it from the old fuddy duddys that normally have them.

;)

Just ask the dealer, I'm forever asking mine quick questions like that, and they're always very helpful. Certainly have a much better understanding about how everything works on my car.

Mine beeps too. I was told that is abs pump or something that operates abs. It beeps because it is ready to work

I have run my auris now for 55k miles , around 90k km, and i have no beeps, but perhaps we need to make sure we clarify what "beep" is... I say this because ...

I have a "squeak" (which i guess could be heard as a beep in some ears...) from the brake pedal lever area, this happens 100% of brake applications it is very faint and whilst a little bit annoying i got used to it.

you can recreate it by applying the brake and then lifting of the pedal very quickly (you will get a squeak noise)

I think it is the little seal on the small hydraulic cylinder connected to the brake pedal.

I took it to the dealers to have it looked at and they told it that it would require investigation and stripping parts , etc etc etc ... so I decided to live with it...

Also i get lots of squeaks from the brake pads and discs... but i am guessing it does not sound like this...

if it is not any of these, you might have an abs sensor problem where while you are not activating the abs , the sensor thinks so and gives a temporary error code and beeps... this could be with a light showing on the dash or perhaps depending on severity of fault it might not trigger the brake VDC light... just the beep... but i think this could be very unlikely...

I think the "beep" in the subject is very, very quiet noise coming from behind the dashboard when you apply brake a little harder ie coming to the traffic lights. It "beeps" as long as you keep the brake pedal down. Jarod said that it beeps if something was ready to use- I think it make sense with Toyota. We already have airbag light that is on when airbag is working :)

I am not good at english words for this :P

It's something like slight brake squeak. I guess it comes somewhere under the hood, and don't think its the brake pads.

I only hear it when radio is off and i brake from some slow speed.

This beeping is well-know. It is more louder when you steering during the breaking.

I heard from toyota dealer that it is made by the oil but ,until this time, not well-known why.

Mine's beeping too. I was worried at first as well, then was told the same - the ABS pump is kicking in, ready to engage the system. I've also heard the same beep when going harder over a speed bump or pothole without even applying the brakes but in a moment when the car "takes off" from the impact, so this is definitely some vehicle stability feature.

Hmmm, I phoned toyota, sales, the service department manager, workshop manager, and 3 technicians have never heard of this before.

They have advised me to take it down for checking, as "you should never take any risks with brakes" lol

Well I guess we will see! Just a damn annoying beep, even when I brake going up hill now!!!!

well they worked on it for an hours and still no clue only it could be abs but they have never heard of this before. They checked brakes which are all ok. They are trying to find another auris identical to mine to compare.

Ah well, I'll keep the radio on. Lol.

I've heard it on a few auris and also on the prius. Definately something to do with brake assist / stability control. Nothing to worry about but i suppose once you've heard it you listen out for it all the time which could get annoying. Keeping the radio on is probably the best option!

My Corolla E15 also emits sounds when braking. I was told that the buzzer signals that EBD is working.

When you hear that sound, that means one of your tires going to loose traction if you keep pushing it.

If your not braking but cornering hard and that low frequency sound kicks in, it means you're near the limit and moderate braking is going to activate ABS or if you give more gas or tighten the turning radius, front end is going to loose traction.

If you're braking but ABS hasn't engaged yet and that sound comes on, it means increasing pressure on the brake pedal or jerky steering wheel operation will result in ABS activating.

If you're going over one of those weird shaped, harsh speed bumps and your speed is way over the limit of that particular speed bump, you hear that sound because just for a second, one of your tires loose traction.

Also, you will hear it in slippery road conditions, wet, greasy, sandy et cetera... If you're about to loose traction, high speed or hard braking, cornering doesn't necessary to start that thing in those kind of conditions.

These are from my trial experiences. I don't know what it is actually, but what it does is pretty obvious.

When I'm pushing the limits of my Auris, I silence the radio and wind all windows up so I can hear the beep; makes things so much easier. I also, am sure about my statements because I was obsessed about it and tried many unnecessary, probably dangerous attempts to figure out when it does come on and what happens if you make different choices after the beep.

...and I also would like the know technology behind it.

Hope this helps.

I was wondering whether the original poster had heard anything more from the garage about the beeping.

My Auris T3 is just about to run out of its warranty and so I'd like to know whether this is something to worry about and get down to the garage, as under the same breaking circumstances I too can hear this beeping noise.

Thanks

not oficially...

its to do with the braking system getting ready to kick in under braking when traction is being lost...

Basically nothing to worry about, you get used to it!
