N/S drive shaft to g/box seal replacement advice please :help:

2002 Avensis 1.8 VVTI manual

Can you replace the seal by just removing the drive shaft, or is it more involved?

Also are there any hidden pitfalls?

Looking at the job it appears I should disconnect the bottom ball joint and track rod end.

Does the brake calliper need removing or can the drive shaft be prised out with it in place?

I guess I will lose a good quantity of gear oil.

Hopefully the seal can then be levered out and the replacement tapped back in.

Have I missed anything important?

I have done a search but can only find reference to the O/S seal, which can be done in place. But can’t find any notes on the N/S :(

Many thanks

Hi mate, i've not done an Avensis but did the same job on a Carina (manual box) a long time ago which I guess is similar. From memory you first need to slacken the outer drive shaft nut on the whilst the car is still on the ground as it is very tight then jack the car up very high and make it safe with a good axle stand with the rear wheels chocked and the handbrake on. Remove the n/s front wheel, driveshaft nut and take off the caliper which needs to be tied up and out of the way to take any tension off the brake hose then take off the brake disc. Disconnect the track rod end and the bottom ball joint and remove the hub from the drive shaft/CV joint. Support and remove the driveshaft from the gearbox with a couple of pri- bars with a sharp levering action then you will have access to the oil seal which you can then carefully lever out, you should not loose to much oil if the car is jacked high enough just on the n/s. With the new seal in place be very careful re- inserting the drive shaft as you can push the circular spring off the back of the oilseal and keep the shaft supported until the outer end is back in the hub and fixed into the bottom ball joint. Reassemble the rest and fully tighten the drive shaft nut once the car is back on the ground to the correct torque (which just escapes me right now), then a new split pin if it has that type of nut otherwise you will have purchased a new nut which will need the outer shoulder peened into the groove in the drive shaft when fully tightened. The gearbox level should now be checked with the car level and topped up as required.

Note:- If anyone else knows if the Avensis is not the same as a Carina or I have missed something (like the torque setting) please amend as required.

Best regards ..... Pete.

Many thanks

you were right but you do NOT need to remove the track rod end and you do not need to remove the caliper.scrap the two pri bar route you will see grooves cut out of the drive shaft(closest too the g/box)put a pri bar in the groove and give it a good hard solid hit with a hammer it will pop right out.done more of these than i care to remember.
