Rebooting The Ecu ?

Somebody told me yesterday that you can reset the computer software on a Toyota Avensis d4d by taking the terminals off the Battery and after a few minutes shorting the leads out by using a spanner to join the positive and negative together,

I find this rather strange and probably would do some damage to the car due to any static in the electrical system.

Any body any ideas.

Yes. When you take the Battery terminals off for 10-15 Min's it does reset the ECU as it loses all the power but no information on the ECU will be erased because its on a flash chip like a BIOS chip on a computer. Their is no need to short the two terminals and i would never stick the + and - wires together. After you reset it, let the engine idle for about 1 Min before driving off so that the ECU can set it self again. You will lose all radio stations and the clock will reset as might the AUTO windows.

Don't really need to d/c the Battery.

Just open up the fuse box in the bonnet. Normally on the right, square plastic box

Locate the fuse pulling tool, this is a white whisbone looking thing.

Remove fuse ECU-B, from memory i think it is the 3rd one down from top left column.

Go and pump the brake to dissipate the charge, maybe wait 5 mins. Put fuse back in and it will be reset and you dont loose memory settings for radio / windows.
