Looking at buying a code reader for my 2005 2.0 D4D Avensis and wondered what sort of reader I need?

Is it OBD2, EOBD or CanBus?

Many available on eBay etc, but would like to know which type I require.

Regards

David

To peanutome,

You require for you vehicle a OBD11 code reader which is canbus compliant. From 2001/2 ? all petrol vehicles sold in Europe should be C/B compliant & all Diesels should be C/B compliant from 2004 as a general rule. Remember the reader you buy will be able to read many other protocals. Mine for example pretty much reads any Toyota from 1997 onwards, it just communicates through the various protocals yet i used it on a 2005 Vauxhall recently & the reader could not talk to the car.

Also many people think a code reader will point exactly to the problem, this is completely wrong, it will point you to possible circuits or sensors that may be at fault, you need high end diagnostics equipment for more precise diagnosis.

Pm me if you like & i will point you to an American company with Uk franchise that sell quality diagnostics equipment at a reasonable price. Also site has Forum that allows you to talk to people in the trade who know what they are talking about , rather than guessing.

Regards, Beagh.

PS: I will leave it with you in regards to a PM.
