Intermittent Accelaration Problem

I drive a toyota avensis diesel 2003 reg 2.0litre and I have had a problem from yesterday, it suddenly stops accelerating and white fumes comes out of the exhaust, it does that for a little while and then suddenly starts moving well again. This has been intermittent since yesterday. I have been asked to buy a fuel injector cleaner which I will do this morning but I am not sure what the problem is, can anyone help?

Might be a clogged injector. How long since you had the fuel filter replaced. Also check the air filter and EGR valve.

Could be water in the fuel.

hello Tee1

- check with any errors recorder in ECU (regarding to injectors solenoids);

white fume is an indicator of late injection;

- have you timing belt or chain?

- all explained by you looks like the el signal was intermittently lost;

- yes , as was recomended please clearly state when fuel fine filter was last changed?

- check withi any errors with SCV on the HP fuel pump.

Cheers/Igor

Thanks a lot for your help, I could not reply quickly 'cos for some reason I was locked out of my account and could not recover it so I had to register again under a new name. Since the time I complained the problem has reoccured a few times. To answer your questions.........

- The engine mgmt light came on this morning and I called out RAC and the code was P1251 which according to him means Fuel shut off valve pressure regulator is malfunctioning. I am not mechanically inclined so I have no clue what that means. I have checked on the internet and in some instances a few people think the turbo is on its way out.

- The timing belt was last chenged at 90k miles, the car is now 124k miles.

- Yes the problem is intermittent and seems to clear if you turn the engine off for a litlle while.

- The Fuel filter was changed on saturday i.e 4 days ago.

- I am not sure about any errors on the SCV/HP fuel pump. Not sure how to check for that.

Any help is highly welcome as I depend on the car for work and its really frustrating at the moment.

Thanks,

9jaguy.

OK the situation becomes clear now. This error stated by you - it self explained.

The explanation of the problem is ---- the injection pressure pulsates and violates a diesel cycle portion.

OK -- this Fuel shut off valve pressure regulator must be located either on the HP fuel injection pump of on the common rail pipe edge.

This one gives a wrong information to your ECU destroying outgoing sygnal to the fuel valves solenoids.

There must be background when the coil is about to be burnt.

Have it checked first.

Good Luck to YOU

Igor

Thanks Igor, I will have the coil checked out hopefully today.

Hi Igor, my mechanic says its not a problem with the coil, wonder what it could be, I just don't want to think I need to replace the turbo 'cos that means a load of money that I don't really have!

hi

OK -- the turbocharges as normal turmine can be maintenanced + cleaned inside from all carbon deposits.

AN EGR valve must also be inspected.

Cheers/Igor

Thanks Igor, I will hopefully get someone who can do a maintenance of the turbo so that I don't have to change it and also check the EGR valve. Its just a problem getting someone to do that here, I am not sure who to trust, never had a problem with the car before so I don't have a trusted garage.

Thanks Igor, I will try and get the EGR cleaned out to start with, the car is still driving and when it loses acceleration I put it in neutral and rev it, a thick black smoke comes out of the exhaust and it starts moving well again.

hi

the physical reason is as follows:

when you normal drive and accelerate the engine ---- a back pressure from EGR valve is being originated giving a sygnal to ECU --- resulting power reducing. but when you shift level to neitral position - the exhaust gas portion is less and sufficient to pass thru EGR valve. it is clear vissible that the EGR valve has to be cleanned. Good luck/Igor

Any idea about the price of the EGR valve for Avensis D4D T3-X 53 Reg?

Hallo. Since this seems to be the right thread to start...

I have driven an Avensis Verso d4d -03 for a few years now.

I had the same acceleration problem. I di dnot pay too much attention...

Friday 2.10. had a bad noise from the turbo. Then white smoke and noise from engine.

Analysis by Toyota maintenance: Turbo dead (broken shaft, crashed vanes...) and metal debris in engine oil.

Another words: new engine and turbo needed. (370 000km in odometer..). I am somewhat technically inclined and we do have a garage so this is going to be a DIY project.

Any help appreciated. Does anyone have a manual with instructions for reference in engine replacement (have done that for Peugeot 406.)

Avensis Verso is not too common here in Finland. Can I use the regular Avensis diesel engine? Or, then, Where to find a replacement?

I will document the project for help to anyone else. Thanks beforehand.

Thanks, John, I will...

OK, I will answer one of my question: Avensis D4D 2.0 and Verso D4D vary at least in exhaust and intake piping and consequently the head is at least a bit different as well. Verso has a variable geometry turbo vanes. In earlier Versos the turbo vane control is over vacuum actuator, but in later versions it is driven

by a servo motor. In principle it may be possible to change from one to another.

I found an Avensis workshop manual from this forum, thank you to the kind poster. There are Avensis Verso workshop manuals advertised in the 'Net, but still I would like to know if they are any good before spending my money on these CD's...

I can get a factory refurbished turbo unit from local dealer (forgot the price quote) but also other options are considered. Dismantling is proceeding.

Hi all, thanks for your help with this problem, I am still driving the car and the problem is still intermittent. I have been told by the guys at Toyota that the problem is the step-motor, hope that cures the problem, I will update you when the problem gets fixed.

I took the car to toyota and after inspection and actually looking at the problem (not just diagnostic) I have been told that the turbo needs replacing or refurbishing. Any ideas on the best thing to do? Refurbish it or get a new one? The car has done 130k miles already anyway so I am thinking may be refurbishing might be better but I don't know where to look. It's a 53 reg Avensis D4D T3X. Thanks for your help.

hello

it depends on the internal condinion of the turbocharger. For sure the repair kits are normally for sale consistiing of bearing bushes seals etc. It is definitely cheapper than turbo whole as new. Cheers/Igor

Hi mate, the only advice I can give you is take it into a specialist turbo repair agents before this turns in something nasty like the internals breaking up and wrecking the engine! It's going to cost you money you don't want to spend now but a wrecked engine will cost you more than the car is worth. Get a quote for the work from both Toyota and the specialist before you agree to any work and choose which one is best for you.

Best regards and good luck on whatever road you take .... Pete.
