The problem is the mechanic said within the next 4 k the rear pads need to be replaced as

well as the discs  Is this common??? previous corolla van had roughly the same mileage and no problem

any replies would be great

I had the same problem with my rear discs when i reached 30K, i went to the garage, they Engraved them to be smooth but they told me that on 45K checkup i might need to replace them

45k km is very short life for brake disks. My previous VW had first time front disks replaced after 80k miles (and 4th set of pads). I am not sure what Toyota fits but VW had fitted ATE or Textar and that is quality stuff. IMO brake discs should last about 100k km- depends on a driving style of course.

I'm sure if you search the site you'll find that brakes are a bit pants on these cars. Did he advise replacement due to wear or was it the condition of the pads/discs?

Thanks fot that knew the brakess were rubbish on the auris

In his opinion it would be wiser to replace both due to the damage caused already

this was not a Toyota dealer so it wasnt a quick one , went to a friend of mine who has a garage told him

just to look at the discs as well ,he said the same

This is my last Toyota  will be traded against a vw golf 1.9 tdi van within a few weeks

Toyota would really want to pull the finger out im only one person i know but the mother feels the same and

we have had toyota's for the last 18yrs

Thanks Phil

A Peugeot 306 I had went through 3 sets of front discs in @ 90,000 miles, don't think I ever replaced the pads. Prior to that I don't think I ever replaced a disc on any car I owned unless it was warped. Could it be that more modern cars have softer disc or harder/more abrasive pads perhaps?

  • 2 weeks later...

I've had all 4 discs replaced at 50k miles , but i do mainly motorway so not so much brake wear...but my discs had a 2-3 mm lip I think... and the pads where down to bare metal nearly... ( 2nd set ) 450 quid all in for all 4 wheels.

I think 47k km in mixed drive conditions is pretty good going...

With brakes you have several approaches to designing them but the most common would be

1. Where Brake pads are softer and wear quicker than discs. ( this means discs will last a long long time). The risk with these is that the disc will age and perhaps deform in time leading to brake judder. This works ok in places where driving speeds are low and climate is moderate. ( Japan for example)

2. Very aggressive pads and disc combo - This is better for high speed users as the high heat generated normally tends to warp discs and lead to brake judder, in these instances the aggressive pads effectively acts skims the disc to try and ensure the disc remains "true" and removes any waviness of the disc. The offset of this is that discs wear quicker. ( this works best in Europe, Germany etc... for our more severe drvinging approach)

If you have had Japanese cars manufactured in Japan mainly for Japan Market you might get type 1 brake systems... if the car was specifically conceived to meet the European driving requirements they might have considered adding type 2.

I think a VW will be designed with the type 2 approach to ensure optimum braking at high speeds and prevent brake judder...
