Notebook... have a look at this site HERE

If you have a tow bar fitted the tow bar ones are better than the rear wheel mount ones.... I would be suspect on hanging my bike of the back of the RAV on the spare wheel....

Hmm -I'm not sure if the spare wheel would enable this to fit. I'm looking to carry some bikes and don't really fancy the roof mounted versions as I don't fancy driving in strong cross winds. The towbar mounted option would be good but notwithstanding the problem of whether the spare wheel gets in the way, what happens when you reach your destination? If the rack wont fit in the car, will the local toe rag pinch it? Or is there a way of locking it to the towbar?

Hi , I use this one http://www.roofrackshop.co.uk/bike/thule-9...ike-carrier.htm

Its a little expensive but I got it cheaper on fleabay. We do a lot of mountain biking and I too got fed up putting bikes on the roof after a good days biking. I particularly like how it folds down. It also locks to the towbar aswell although it does fit in the back of the rav when needed.

Looks good -but the picture of the Merc estate makes it look as if the first bike would be where the spare wheel is -so do you just use the third (ie outermost position) and accept that you can never use the first two?

I dont have a spare but my brother-inlaw uses my carrier, he has a long swan-kneck tow eye, and as you said doesnt use the first carrier.

Ive just take the Witter one off my Rav when i part exed it, i had it on the 4.2 and the 4.3. Its the one that you have a bracket fixed to the tow bar and the pipe fastens into it. Theres a kinked (to pass the wheel) pipe which has the horns on the top to hang the bikes. This is a really solid method and the strongest i think. The Rav needs a low line bracket so the door doesnt hit it (on 4.2) and it doesnt obscure number plate (on 4.3).

I actually added a cross bar to mine to stop the bikes/s swinging and it allows the wheels to be strapped tight. I welded a piece of tube across about halfway down the vertical like in the picture below.

I'm intrigued as to how it gets round the spare wheel problem -look forward to the images.

My tow bar protrudes out past the spare wheel... I may have to remove the cover though as that may be a tight fit..... ;) ;) ;)

Hi Chatman ( - and Happy Birthday ) ,

I had a similar problem on my Vitara ( bracket too close to the spare wheel ). It had the standard two bolt tow ball which I removed and fitted an aluminium spacer ( Halfrauds ) and longer bolts. About 30mm clear of the cover when I had finished. On a Trooper I made and fitted a 170mm long fabricated steel spacer between the ball and the bracket. I wouldn't use it for towing but it was great for the bike rack.

Package arrived today...nicely wrapped up...(will annoy all in office with bubble wrap popping :o :o )

Some pictures showing fitted in works carpark (Bikes are optional   )...and as mentioned I will have to remove the Spare Wheel Cover..as thought... it's also a very good fit...mind the fingers though when it clips shut....has a catch for a lock (shows this in the manual)

We bought 4 of the Thule 591 ProRides a couple of summers ago. Had to buy the cross rails too. The whole lot was pretty pricey, but we're happy with them.

They hold the bikes very securely, and I like the fact that they lock. We got the "Keyed Alike" system, one key for all.

We just throw a plastic footstool in the boot to make it easier to lift them off and on at our destination. I manage no problem (5'8" girly!).

Also keeps the towbar clear for a rib on trailer and for when we sometimes borrow my sister's caravan.
