12 Year Old Corolla

Talking to a friend at Toyota this afternoon and he has a 12 year old 13.K corolla with full service history coming in under the scrap-page deal...the only blemish on this pristine car is a six inch scratch above the wing...one owner and only used to go to Sainsbury's once a week...This car would do someone for another ten years and still be going strong...it is an absolute travesty as under this scheme he has to scrap it and it can not be sold on.

I agree

Mine is 18+ years old & I wouldn't scrap her in a fit. She goes like clockwork & is totally reliable. :P

Why spend a fortune on something new, even allowing for Scrappage , when what you have is working well & not losing any significant amount through depreciation

Well thats an absolute disgrace :censor:

And the useless :censor: s are extending the number of cars being allowed into the scheme - well thats what i saw in another reputable forum.

Not much good to Jaguar/Land Rover workers - appearently JLR are going closing one of their plants in the next year or 3. The Koreans are doing very well out of it mind - can't fill the boats fast enough.

I can understand the bit about many of the people who are participating in the scheme as in customers - not been car enthusiasts - therefore that immaculate Fiesta or whatever is still just a 12 year old Fiesta - and scrapping it is no big deal. But scrapping cars with such a low mileage is just taking the micheal - and before Part King and others start pointing out the benefits to the motor industry - heres a proposal.

You get a £1,000 grant from the goverment for buying a car with less than 120 grams per km of C02 (am i right in thinking that co 2 emissions on cars are measured in grams per km) - you don't have to scrap a car to get it - theres no need in my opinion. You can limit numbers as in the current scheme - the manufacturers can add their own £1,000 or more as is the case now. I see no eviromential problems arising from the fact that under my proposed scheme - cars would not be scrapped to get the grant. The customer benefits - because that 12 year old Fiesta can be sold on as normal - so on top of the grant and manufacturer discount - you also get whatever the person buying the Fiesta pays for it.

No you don't have to get rid of your car - the cars that are being scrapped are been traded in for new ones and are over 10 years old.

If you have a car over 10 years old you can still keep your old car no bother at all - however if you go to a dealer and trade it in for a brand new car - then it will be scrapped - so an owner can still keep a car more than 10 years old on the road - but if they want a brand new car and don't want to scrap the old car - then they will have to do a straight deal with the dealer for the new car - ie the deal will be done with the new car going out from the dealer and nothing coming in (part exed) - you would then either keep the old car or sell it privately. If they buy a car thats say 12 months old - then the 10 year old or more car can be part exed at the dealer as normal and won't be scrapped as the scheme only applies to brand new cars.

Do you not think it's the owners fault for agreeing to exchange it for the scrappage allowance in the first place rather than the dealers who are just, unfortunately, playing by the rules of the scheme?

If the owner hadn't agreed to scrap it, it'd be sold on no problem to someone who probably would appreciate it.

So its the fault of the ex-owner really, not the scheme.

I refused to put my car in under the scrappage scheme on principle, I had a 10 year old Ford Ka, mechanically it was in pretty good condition though I strongly suspect the starter motor was going and had only 57000 on the clock what let my car down was the age old Ford Ka problem-rust. My garage advised me that it was uneconomical to put it through its MOT as it would fail on the body work and it was likely that I would need all four tyres replacing. My feeling was that someone with a bit of time and knowledge could get the car through its MOT and back on the road and it would be fine for another couple of years as a little run a round. Added to the fact that though you get a couple of grand knocked off the car you still have to pay VAT and the rate of depreciation is such that I would very quickly loose that 2 grand.

I shopped round and e mailed a number of garages saying something along the lines of I like such and such car who much will you give me for mine? I managed to get offered £800 for my Ka part ex from a Toyota dealership, and made it clear on arriving at the garage that if they offered me less after inspection of the car I would refuse to look at any of their cars so after a long discussion with his manager the salesman offered me £800, far more than the car was worth (in 1 place the rust had ate through the metal) and bought my self a Toyota Yaris 1 litre engine T3  4 years and 1 month old so no MOT or service for a year with 17200 on the clock.
