Corolla Burning Oil

hi all,

first post here so here we go,

we have a few 00-01 1.4 vvti corollas in my household, 2 of these have just the 100k miles on them and are burning some oil

the rate is around 2L per 5000miles

we use either valvoline fully synthetic or 5w-30 semi synthetic oil, these cars have always been serviced around the 10k miles mark

just wondering what can be done to slow this down or is it something that we will have to live with

also what is the root cause, have heard some say it is poor piston rings, more say that is is low sulphur in the petrol causing wear, others say that it is a porous block in the piston region and more say that it is cylinder bore too large for the pistons

also have heard that putting some ATF into the oil 200-300 miles before changing can help aleviate the problem as it cleans any gunk from the engine and can help free up piston rings

any thought or preferably cures for this problem

You can change the oil with another type 10W-40 and add a bottle of engine treatment like dura lu... (in this way, few years ago I managed to revive an used engine of a cheaper car than yours), after this you try to change the oil at 4000 miles.
