Hi all

Quick question, I have a xt3 Rav 4 2007 that does not have the steering controls on the steering wheels. I wonder if anyone has changed this to one that has steering controls? I have seen one in a breakers yard that has the complete airbag etc and I wonder if I can fit this to mine so that I can have steeting contols for my radio?

If so how difficult are they to remove, anyone done it before?

Thanks

replaced the wheel on my 4.1.

On yours, the basics are watching the airbag doesn't go off!!

I'd guess that things like the contacts for the extra stuff might need to be swapped as well?

Yeah I suspect that I would have to pick up some leads somewhere for the steering controls. To be honest I don't know if it is worth it. I am going to be fitting some fog lights and I thought that I might able to change the stalk for the the lights rather than add the button for the additional fog lights.

Does anyone know if you need to remove the steering wheel for changin the indicator stalk to add one with fog lights?

I will give you all the info on Sunday regarding those jobs.

It is hard to say what might work regarding the radio controls but if I had to guess I would say that yes it would. Wiring looms tend to be quite common. For the fog lights, I can see why you want to do it - it makes a nicer job and I think that is all just a matter of changing the switch.

There is a risk so don't hold me to ransom!!!

Fitting instructions tomorrow (remind me if you haven't seen them by tea time!!!)

PS don't pull that airbag off to have a look or unless you prepare it or you stand a chance of getting a real smack in the gob and there is a special spiral cable that could get damaged - sit tight.

May sound like a stupid answer, but have you considered trading your XT3 for an Xt4/R when you consider the difference in spec, sunroof, climate control, leather, stability control etc it may be viable, someone on here did it + ended up with all of the above + virtually getting back what they originally paid for the car, see here.. http://toyotaownersclub.com/forums/index.p...howtopic=102065 of course this is only a thought + may not be right for you :thumbsup: Stew

Just in case you go for option 1, here are the instructions for removing the wheel and the switch;

Steering_wheel.pdf

Alternatively, for the steering switch controls they are removeable seperately;

steering_switches.pdf

You could just remove the airbag and see if the wires are tucked away. Take care with that airbag and I would disconnect the Battery and have a brew while the capacitor voltage soaks away rather than just 90 seconds.

Have fun!

Thanks Anchorman and Stew your help is really appreciated. I have to be honest I am only still thinking about changing the wheel. I have only bought the rav a month ago so I don't want to be chaning it just yet. I would have bought a XT4 or XTR if there had been any that had low enough miles but I couldn't see any that had under 14,000, so the one that I picked up with 7,000 suits me well.

I am having a dilema as to whether to try and change the wheel or not. I am waiting to see if I can get a relay for the RAV (god the are like gold dust by the looks of things) so that I can try the fog lights out.

Don't suppose anyone knows a good place to get a relay for the front fogs, (tried King po and they look like they are about £60) stupid when they are only about £3 for a relay in the likes of Halfords etc.... Mr T price fixing again I think!

Cheers

a relays a relay - just buy one that has the capacity to handle the current load. I tend to buy that stuff from maplin or rs components.

Whether you decide to fit a switch will dictate if you need that special relay but I would have thought a good auto electrical specialist could locate one. The proper Toyota kit has everything, is this one of the US imports?

If not you can use a normal 4 pin relay as bothy says.

Yeah it was the kit off eBay, and before anyone says I know that it is different to the toyota one but is also is about £90 cheaper. I think I will try rs components, also trying to see if I can get one from a breakers yard.

Cheers
