A Few Tyre Questions

Hi All :)

I have a Gen 6 Celica 2.0Ltr GT, L Reg with standard tryes (205/55/15), of which the rears are now bordering legal. My Father has given me 4 excellent tyres from his M reg Audi A6 Estate, size (205/60/15). As you can see, the sizes all match except the profile? size.

1. Will they fit my rims/wheels? ( Guy in lsmall local tyre shop says yes as long as only profile size is a little bigger).

2. Is it legal?

3. Is it safe to fit them?

4. How will it affect the handling, roadholding, grip etc?

Any Tyre guru's want to help me with this please?

Many thanks for any/all replies :D

1.yes, they will fit very well

2.if this size is not written in registration/car card are not realy legal, but it's hard to be noticed at a first sight

3.yes, it's safe to fit them

4.the handling won't be affected, nor the grip and the feeling of the car will be better, I mean suspension will be more comfortable, because the total radius of the wheel will increase with 10.25 mm so the speed of the car when your clock shows 100kmph will be 103.38

my oppinion: fit'em

Hi, I have worked in the tyre industry at test standard for a HP manufacturer for 8 years, so the one thing I know about is tyres, in my professional opinion...

1. Yea they'll fit

2. technically not legal as its not the OE fitment, youll have to declare it to your insurance as it could invalidate it in the case of an accident (they can be that picky)

3. Yes

4. I'd imagine the tyres from the Audi will be XL and possible a W rated speed rating, in this case the ride would be hardened slightly and with the profile the tyres are they could 'roll' slightly on hard cornering but is unlikely at regular speeds. the grip would largely depend on the tyres that are going on and as the previous guy said, your speedo would be out slightly by about 2mph. I would say if they're good branded tyres from the Audi then sell em, and just get the correct size for your celica.

Hi Again.

Just wanted to say many thanks for both of your replies. I have read what you have said carefully and decided that in these difficult financial times I will get in touch with my insurance company and tell them my intention to fit the tyres from the A6 and ask them how will it affect my insurance in the event of a claim and if it will cost me anything extra. Hopefully as the tyre size difference is so small, they will charge very little, if anything. I am more pleased to hear that it is safe to do so and will not affect safety while driving. The two fronts will only last approx. another 3-4 months if I take care of them so it would be good for me to fit all four really. Just out of interest, I will have to buy one new tyre anyway as the tyre wall of one of the A6 tyres is crinkly and worn and probably not safe to use sadly. It also has less tread than the others. The other 3 are in excellent condition and have very, very good tread left. Thank you for your help and advice :)

Andrew
