Carina E 1.8 Battery Problems

Recommended Posts

Hi im a new member on this forum,

My grandad has a Toyota Carina E 1.8 petrol 1997 (P). The car has been ok for years but recently the Battery terminals have been drying up, so the there was no response, however this has been fixed with a bit of grease so that has been fixed.

But on Saturday morning the car would not start after been left for 2 days. The Battery was recharged, this started it, but after the a while the car wouldnt start so a jump start was needed by my corsa.

The Battery has been charged several times over the last few days and as long as the car is started every 4 hours or so it will start first time but when i say first time, i mean it takes 40 seconds or so which is a long time....

When we start it is clicks for a while, the engine chokes and tries to fire up and eventually it does. In side all the red warning lights fade in and out as it tries to start.

When we turn the key half way (so we can have the fan & radio on) they stay on. When we did this at night with no radio or fan just the lights, the interior lights on dash fade slowly and noise that sounds when the door is open when the lights are on, the noise also fades but the outside lights stay on.

One thing we did notice on saturday, when engine did come on and settle down it was revving at around 800 rpm (normally its around 1500 rpm, we think this was down to a slight crash years ago) the car was left running outside and some how it just stopped on its own. It is now running normally.

The drive belt was changed at 50k, the car has now done 94k.

Any help would be fantastic, i know other people on here have had similar problems, but i thought it would be better to start a fresh thread because of all the different things wrong with it.

PLUS the bettery discharge light doesnt stay on, and has never been on,

Once again any help would be fantastic, thankyou
