Verso Mmt Recall?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

New user to the forum and I have to admit had I been aware of this forum many years ago I would not be about to type this post. My wife has a Verso 1.8mmt and we purchased it brand new back in March 2005. We had our first problem with the gearbox about 3-4 months into the ownership when we got the transmission failure warning, put it into Toyota and they said nothing was wrong. Over the last 4 years we have had reasonably frequent problems and every time it went in for a service we highlighted it to be told, no its fine. In the summer we went to Ireland and could not drive for 10 minutes without it failing. On one drive which lasted 45 minutes it failed 8 times. When we came home the problems semed to be less frequent however we booked it into the local Toyota Garage after further frustration, example last week drove for 120 miles to outside of Glasgow, pulled up behind a traffic jam watched the engine carefully, let it settle down into first gear then whilst sitting knocked it into neutral. All fine, traffic moves 50 yards, do the same routine again then go to pull away and nothing there. Engine off, count to 10, key back in and away it goes again.

I took it into Toyota yesterday and after about an hour with the car they tell me "there has been a recall on the car". Does anyone know when this was, I was told there was a 40 page bulletin issued. After getting the car back from them there is now a constant smell of burning clutch which was not there before, even when the transmission failed. The dealer also mentioned the warranty however given its age I cant see how that can be applicable.

I know there are multiple posts on this subject and had I read them back in 2005 I would not own the car. Basically I ws wondering if anyone knew about this "recall" and if so what did it cover? We recently went in to the showroom to look at the new Verso and were suitably impressed but would want the full diesel auto, dont think they do a full petrol auto yet but I would be very wary now of buying another Toyota given my experience with this one and the constant relcutance of the Dealer to admit there was an issue with this particualr gearbox. Now its out of waranty I have no doubt that there will all of a sudden be a problem.

Thanks in advance.

Hi there

We have received our Safety Recall Notice this week. Interestingly, the letter is undated, which looks quite unprofessional to me.

I have also contributed to the other posts on the MMT problems, however, overall, our experience with the MMT over the last 3 years has been positive. What the exact MMT problem is, has not been specified, only that the car will undergo some tests for approx 1 hour to see if the actual problem does exist with our car. Let's hope not.
