I want to go from 195/60x15 (standard) size wheels to either 205/40x17 or 215/40x17.

please could someone tell me which would be best for gearing purposes and which will not catch anywhere.

many thanks phillip.

205 45 17 would be the best fit, because on calculation this turns out to be only 1mm different in diameter to the standard set up. That's if this type of tyre are available. The ones you quoted all come out a little smaller than the original outside diameter.

Have a fiddle with this wheel/tyre size calculator Click Here

Not sure if they are  I'm on 215/40/17's which i was told was the closest size available.

I was told the 215/40x17 was the nearest size as well.

many thanks phillip.
