Gearbox Failure Help!

Hi All,

Really need your help.

My Avensis 1.8 gs saloon's gearbox has failed. Also destorying the casing.

The gearbox is apparently the VVTi type although the car is apparently not.

Engine code is 7AU438563

Chatting to toyota garage this morning (not the local chap doing the work) the gearbox has a denotion of AT221 but that may just be random and have no meaning....not the most helpful.

I need to know what it is I have. They can refurb the box for around £500, but it then needs new clutch, new front pads and with labour will probably top £750 which is about what you could probably buy one for. And with MoT till Jan only I am not sure I want to take the risk.

On the other hand eBay box for £100 - if it is the right one would mean around 350 - and possibly (though not definately) worth it.

What do you think guys? Does anyone know which is the right gearbox?

I would recommend you buy one from eBay and get it fitted

just make sure it comes with a warranty of miles or months

I would check with your local breakers first. I have bought a gearbox off eBay for an Alfa 156 & it was actually from a Fiat & would not fit. I thenbought one from

A local breaker will offer 3 to 6 months warranty.
