Road Noise

Has anyone had any attempt at reducing the amount of road noise levels in a Mk2 Yaris 1.3 5 door,

I have increased the thickness of the Rubberised under-seal under the Wheel Arches, and also put thick under-seal under the boot area, along with thicker carpeting in rear interior floor areas = it has improved only slightly the amount of noise generated when driving over surface water.

But it would be a great advantage if there were a good (Reasonably Priced) "Soundproofing Kit" available, to cut down on the general road surface noise. emanating mainly from the front of the car,

I think a lot of noise could be reduced if it were possible to fill the open to single skin front wing areas, within the engine bay, with some acoustic fibre, but I fear this would probably increase the temperature within the engine bay.

Can't really help you with this, but it's something i have been thinking about for a while now..

My 2000 SR is especially noisy with the TTE backbox fitted and on the m/way it gets ridiculously noisy when accelerating between 80-90mph for example.

Infact the whole car is like that, any rough road surface or wet roads and the noise is bad despite the car having nothing wrong with it.

Maybe it's just a Yaris thing, dunno but any help on soundproofing would be welcome by me aswell. ;)

We had the same thing with our SR. I put builders flashing tape in the boot over the area where the exhaust is. This has stopped the droning noise when you're on the motorway. Well worth it as it's cheap to do!

Thanks "Gunzi" the flashing tape is a good tip, I used it some time ago on a Vectra Est. that I owned at that time, to cut down on annoying Vibration on above rear Wheel Arch.

My problem is with the Yaris, = Front End Road Noise, I'm tempted to try Fibre Wool Roof Insulation, tucked in between the outer skin of the front wings and the inner Sub Frame, as I believe this is the Probable source of the noise transmission.

The main problem I have with this idea is

1. It may also insulate the engine bay in regard to high temperature (cutting down on internal air flow to space around outer single skin)

2. it may get wet and not dry out, therefore inducing the Dreaded Rust.

3. I may not (due to the restricted space) be able to retrieve all the material after the trial.

4. Ear Plugs may be a cheaper easier solution.

Flashing tape works quite well at certain frequencies, its nice an cheap (used to be cheapest from Wickes). However you have to make sure you clean the metal before applying thoroughly else after a couple of weeks it will just peel off leaving horrible black gunk.

Don't use roofing insulation this won't work, its not designed to reduce noise its designed to keep heat in. You need to dampen the sound (adding weight to something does this, and that why flashing tape works. Or you need to block the sound (much harder) to do this you need to create a chamber which is hard to do in houses never mind a car.

There used to be a product around called brown bread that was like a thicker version of flashing tape.

Dynamat Extreme is a better product but much more expensive. You need to make sure you get to the places that transmit the noise, this is sometimes hard espically if there is a box section. Wheel archs are a good start.

Thick foam barrier could be used under carpet. Cheapest place to get these would be from a high spec car in the scrap yard. OE stuff is very good and would cost a fortune to buy new. Laminate floor insulation doesn't work well if anyone as thinking of this one.
