Oil Change

just wondering if anyone as posted anything on the site on how to do oil change on a 2004 avensis.Tried to purchase a oil filter but seems to be a dealer part and i cant seem to find the location of the filter in the engine bay.Last time i tried to do this on my merc A class found out this was specialised job as you required a special tool to empty the oil via the small 10mm dipstick tube using a pump as no sump plug is fitted .after managing to get hold of the fiter using a specialised company.

Hi,

The Merc A class, is specialised as it is not a standard engine, or layout due to it's location. There is no Haynes manual available for the 2004 model onwards.

there is no specialised equipment needed to replace the oil filter on the Avensis, just an oil filter tool needed, but only if it's on very tight. You should also relace the oil at the same time.

Remove the oil drain plug to allow the oil to be removed. It's a simple process for majority of engines where there is a standard engine layout.

Hopefully somebody else can post a response with images on how to di it.

Cheers,

Marv

Sorry is it Diesel. If it is as far as i know the filter can be accessed through the under tray at the bottom of the car. Remove one bolt and under a little flap you can see the filter. Don't know if the location is different from the 2.0 to 2.2.

......on my car,AV 2003 2.0L diesel, manual gear,,the oil filter is easier to access from under the car. There is a small flap, and you just have to unscrew a small bolt to acces the filter.

pasherp, the procedure for changing engine oil of your car is:

1. REMOVE OIL FILTER ELEMENT SERVICE HOLE COVER

Remove the clip from the oil filter element service hole cover.

2. REMOVE OIL FILTER CAP ASSEMBLY

Remove the oil filter drain plug and O-ring, then insert the drain pipe into the oil filter cap and drain the engine oil into a container.

(The drain pipe is supplied with the oil filter element.)

Using SST (wrench), remove the oil filter cap.

SST

3. REMOVE OIL FILTER ELEMENT

Remove the oil filter element and 2 O-rings from the oil filter cap.

4. INSTALL OIL FILTER ELEMENT

Clean the inside of oil filter cap, threads, and O-ring groove.

Apply a small amount of engine oil to a new O-ring and install it to the oil filter cap assembly.

Install a new oil filter element into the oil filter cap assembly.

Remove any dirt or foreign matter from the contact surfaces of the oil filter cap assembly (with oil filter element) and oil filter bracket.

Install the oil filter cap assembly (with oil filter element) to the oil filter bracket.

5. INSTALL OIL FILTER CAP ASSEMBLY

Using SST, tighten the oil filter cap.

SST

To me these instructions sound like its for the newer diesel (AD) engines with an oil filter element.

This engine wont be fitted to an 2004 car.

2004 diesel filter is located at front of the engine (as said its behind a plastic cover underneath) its mounted horizontally. its quite a big metal filter so you cant miss it.

Thanx to all as i managed to do this ,what a piece of pi**.Paid 32.99 for fully sythetic 5-30w oil and 5.00 for filter, also added the zx1 superlube additive ultimate friction reducer for 17.99.All of this only took an hour and the hardest thing to do was undo the old oil filter, which i did wearing some rubber gloves to give me a good grip around the filter. How much would the toyota dealership would have cost if i went there.

Probably a bit more than that but when your car is serviced there you also pay for the overheads and the knowledge of the techs.

Plus all you have done it change the oil - during a service your cars brakes/suspension/seatbelts/fluids/tyres&pressures/wipers/filters/steering/exhaust etc etc would be checked too.

Good work on doing it though. :D

You did the right thing doing it yourself using good oil etc, can't believe Toyota couldn't help with the antifreeze thing .... anyway Toyota use a red antifreeze so if yours has pink water in the radiator expansion tank you should be ok if the mix is correct, you can buy a hydrometer to test it for about £5.00. Do not use any other type in your car as it doesn't mix, may not be suitable and may damage your engine, also the Toyota stuff is non-toxic which is a good thing.

Regards Pete.

How you mean about the antifreeze? If you want to check it remove the radiator cap (twists off) to check if any coolant in the rad itself and also check the level in the coolant tank (plastic tank with clip on plastic top).

As above the coolant should be red if genuine longlife toyota stuff or pink if the super longlife coolant has been used.
