Knocking Noise In Rear End

Hi,

I own a 1996 3L Auto Surf which has developed a knocking sound in the rear end. The sound is only heard when i apply the brakes. When i apply the brakes hard, no sound is heard. It only occurs when i apply them gently and then gradually apply more force. The sound is heard numerous times during the period of breaking, in a random pattern.

I assure you its not the spare wheel underneath. The local mechanic pointed that out as being the problem and tried to align it better. We drove away with the knock and the mechanic thinking we are idiots.

My best guess (with minimal mechanical knowledge) is that its something to do with the suspension maybe?
