I am regularly getting 55mpg - 62mpg from my gen 2 prius (2006 33,000)

and wondered how much better the new gen 3's are?

reading the specs toyota seem to think approx. 10mpg better...?

i am just not conviced the prius is much better than a sensibly driven avensis?

Hey John,

Average in my Gen3 with 2000 miles is 61.7. High score 74.8. It may not be that much better than a Gen2 ..maybe 5mpg ave?? BUT.... it emits less CO2 and, according to my wife it looks a lot more stylish. I use her point of view rather than mine because as she's always telling me, i'm in absolutely no position to judge style :crybaby:

Seriously though, if i had a Gen2, and it was less than 3 years old and i was getting 55-62, it would be a hard decision to take to change it. Unless you're loaded of course :toast:

If the Gen 2 is less than 3 years old then the remaining hybrid warranty (from the original 8 years) will be longer than a Gen 3 (5 years).

You could always take look at the data on the Fuelly.com web site..... place where real consumption is logged, so you can get an idea of the range of mpg for a particular model. The site does some clever things with conversion factors too, so it can take account of US Gallons vs UK vs Litres, miles and kilometers.

Depressingly, my consumption figures are at the bottom of the range

All 2010 Prius data is at http://www.fuelly.com/car/toyota/prius/2010

but then this is infinitely better than my old Volvo, and appears to be getting better over time.

You can get Fuelly to show all the data it has for the old and new Prius (and for the Avensis).
