The Toyota Aygo seems to hold its second-hand value very well.

For example, compare my own car, an Aygo Blue 3 door manual

with a Ford Fiesta 1.25i Zetec 3 door manual:

After four years, the Aygo is worth 4032 pounds sterling whilst the

Fiesta is worth less at 3903.

HOWEVER, a new Fiesta costs almost 4000 pounds more,

12,895 compared to the Blue at 8,995.

I'm trying to decide on the best time to sell a car owned from new.

What do you reckon ???

Hi, I was reading the other day that at the moment second hand cars are doing well for price, with the scrappage scheme doing well, apparently there is a shortage of second hand cars. This is born out by some of my local garages having signs outside them saying they need second hand cars.

Price wise it should be an advantages time to look at new ones.

Looking on autotrader ones similar to ours are advertised at around £6,000. Three year depreciation - £1000!

In Greece, it's not possible to find a used Aygo.

you buy a new one.....

Yes - the UK scrappage scheme must have had an effect on the market.

I got mine through scrappage - it's actually worth more after one year

than my scrappage cost price ! (6200 - 6340)

However, I'd still have to stump up almost 3 grand for another new one !

... but I'm not convinced that a new Blue is actually worth 9 grand.

Got a phone call from West Riding Toyota, Huddersfield, West Yorks last week offering to give me a new vehicle in exchange for my 10 month old Platinum. The deal was I get a 5 door instead of a 3 door, mine had bluetooth fitted, alloys, and mats. The offer was £2 less per month than I am already paying???? Opted for GAP insurance so in real terms I am paying £9 per month more for a brand new car...........shortage of second hand cars again!

Do yourself a favour and go see the staff there, they treat you like family! I am on my 5th Toyota (3 Yaris, 2 Aygo) Highly Recommended!!!

Did you start on a new finance agreement, or were the new payments for the remaining term of your existing loan?

Not sure what I'd say if my Dealership offered something like that...nice to have the option I guess!

Hi AygoYugo...I compared the same cars -- aygo Vs Fiesta...and although i really liked the fiesta (and still do), its costs outweighed the car.

Over three years (or 4 or 5) - the aygo is more cost effective, a lot is down to depreciation & market trend towards more economical cars.

and while the 2nd hand value of the aygo should remain strong - i am concerned about how the scrapage scheme might effect second hand values.

1) some people who are buying NEW aygos are people who might have bought a 2nd hand aygos if it wasnt for the scrapage scheme -- this, i would assume reduces demand for 2nd hand aygos....

2) this leads onto - why buy a 2nd hand aygo for £6000, when you could get a NEW one £6000 to £7000 with finance, warrenty, dealer security etc.

3) Production cars are not supposed to appreciate, buy on scrapage for £6K, sell it a year later for £7K....not "supposed" to work - so how will the market adapt or take this i dont know...someones got to loose out somewhere.

So based on the scrapage scheme of things - it should depress the 2nd hand values, like an adjustment because of thelower purchase price.

On the flip side, there are still people who dont qualify for the scrapage scheme...where the usual market factors still happen.

Whens the best time to sell the aygo...i dont really know!

BUT - my plan is this....

1) buy brand new aygo, thats low cost to run over the next 5 years

2) in 3 to 5 years, electric & hybrid cars will be more common, and petrol may becoming unaffordable/too costly (only a guess)

3) make the change over to the new power systems.

So what i'm saying is, I expect there to be a period of "change over" from fosil fuels to electric (or whatever they come up with).

If you catch that change over too early or too late, it will cost you a fair wack.

Of course, i dont know what will happen in the next 5 years, but thats my thoughts on the car...
