Window Washer Pump Problem.

Hi All,

I have a 1998 Avensis 1.6.

I hadn't used the car at all last week, getting to work by Motorbike ..

Went to go to the shops on Friday eve, wanted to clear the screen, wiper action no fluid..Doh!

Fluid in Bottle, yup, Wipers coming on, yup, Noise from pump, no.

So, is there a fuse for the window washer pump? I checked the engine bay fuse box and the fuses at the steering wheel area. Can't see anything marked washer pump etc..

Could it be something else? the fact the wipers come on means it can't be the stalk not making contact? Is the pump located under the bottle? is the easiest access through the wheel arc, take off the wheel/liner. Any help is very much appreciated.

Not sure about your model but the 2003 onwards has the same 25A fuse for wipers and washer so if the wipers work the fault may be the pump or its circuit.

Thanks for the response fitter.

I suppose i'll just have to tke the pump off and connect it to a batterey to see if its working.

Balls, 500 mile commute for the week and no washers, it'll be interesting.

Thanks ;)

An update for anyone having the same prob. (sorted now)

I went and got a 2nd hand pump from a breakers, turns out it didn't work too, but i did check the connecters and there was power going to it, so it had to be pump. Got another from another breakers and bingo, it worked.

So, to get at the window washer pump. Take off the wheel pump side, there are about 5 screws in the the wheel arch lining you take out, pull it out of your way so you can access the pump. The pump will be on the outside of the bottle, away from the engine bay. The pump has an electrical connection and a small pipe going to the base of it. Disconnect both.

The pump is mounted to the bottle at two points, a spout from the bottom of the pump into a rubber washer into the bottle, and a plastic connecter that slides into a groove in the bottle. Take it out make sure to refit the washer at the base if it comes out, reconnect the new one and voila. New working pump.

I paid 10 euro from a breakers for both pumps, toyota wanted 97 ex vat for a new one.
